I have a Dell Vostro laptop 1500 with Windows Vista Business, Intel Core2 Duo, and 2 gigs of ram. Approximately a month ago whenever I start up the computer after about three minutes it freezes and displays an error message. The message reads: Login process has failed to create the proper dialog, and the box says: Failure security options. When I press the power and turn it back on with start windows normally the computer operates for hours without crashing, it only happens when the computer is turned off for a while and then turned back on. I have already tried to reformat the hard drive but that only temporarily fixed the problem. Some people have said it’s the memory, but I want some ideas on what the problem is before I go that route. I don’t know computers that well so I thank you very much for the help. Any suggestions will be very helpful!:(

Hi doomula;

After researching your error it does seem to be Vista related and not a memory issue.

Since it worked fine after a format I suspect it's a program conflict or an update to a program that might not be compatable with Vista. What programs have you installed after the format?

Most likely it is a conflict with your security program. Symantec was the one most often found to be at fault. What antivirus or antispyware programs do you have installed?

Do you have the latest Windows updates?

I did find a few other possibilites but not likely ones in your situation.

At this point it might not hurt to run a diagnostic on your memory using Vista.

Go to the Control Panel and click on System and Maintenance.

Click on Administratitive Tools.

Open the Administrative Tools folder.

Double click Memory Diagnostics Tool.

Choose your option when to run it.

I have to admit I don't know how reliable the Vista test is.

In your first post the error you got might be related to automatic backup to an external drive. Do you have auto backup enabled?

While searching for possible causes of that error there were a fair number of people who resolved it by turning of that feature for external drives. I can't say that is the problem but it won't hurt to check.

Go to the Control Panel (Home).

Under System and Mainenance click Backup your computer.

From there check to see if it's setup to auto backup.

I can't check any furthur as I don't think this is an option for Vista Home Premium but it should be an option for your version.

I'll see if I can find more instructions for you and I'll post back.

Correction. Autobackup is available in all versions of Vista except Basic.

Look at the Petri site and scroll down to Disable automatic backup schedule.
