Upgraded from Win 2K to Win XP Home Edition : Apps Not Working

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,

I upgraded recently from Win 2K to Windows XP Home Edition. I then upgraded

to XP SP2. I had lot of Apps installed on Win 2K. Now when I try to run these

Apps in XP, they don't work. When I reboot my machine and start Win 2K, can't

do that anymore. Is there any kind of utility or setup that will allow me to

run all my pre-existing Apps on Win 2K in Win XP? or Do i need to re-install

them?

Thanks in Advance,

Anil

The upgrade path that you have taken was the wrong one. Windows 2000 Pro must be

upgraded using Windows XP Pro. See this link for more details:

I'm not aware of any utility that will run your apps as they are now configured.

Your best bet would be to try to re-install them. If this does not prove to be

successful, your only option would be to backup all of your data to another

resource and then do a clean installation of the OS and then install all of your

apps again.

Good luck!

That's not possible. You can upgrade from Windows 2000 to XP

Professional, but not to XP Home.

So exactly what did you do?

That sounds like you installed Windows XP Home along with 2000 in a

dual-boot configuration. Is that what you did?

What does "can't do that anymore" mean. Exactly what happens when you

try? If you get an error message, please quote it verbatim. Did it

ever work after you installed XP?

Unless you did an upgrade (which as I said, isn't possible) the apps

aren't installed in XP and can *not* be run. Yes, you need to

reinstall them.

Re: Upgraded from Win 2K to Win XP Home Edition : Apps Not Working

Hi Thanks for helping me out. Here are the answer.

I upgraded recently from Win 2K to Windows XP Home Edition.

That's not possible. You can upgrade from Windows 2000 to XP

Professional, but not to XP Home.

So exactly what did you do?

**I installed windows xp home edition which came with dell cd when I bought

dell laptop.

I had windows 200o before.

I then upgraded

to XP SP2. I had lot of Apps installed on Win 2K. Now when I try to run these

Apps in XP, they don't work. When I reboot my machine and start Win 2K,

That sounds like you installed Windows XP Home along with 2000 in a

dual-boot configuration. Is that what you did?

**I didn't intent to but looks like its now a dual boot configuration..when

system boots its give me option

of both OS i.e 2000 and xp. but when I choose 2000 now as my os it doesn't

work give me error(some file missing etc)

can't

do that anymore.

What does "can't do that anymore" mean. Exactly what happens when you

try? If you get an error message, please quote it verbatim. Did it

ever work after you installed XP?

**In windows 2000 I had bunch of application under program file which is now

missing in "xp-all programs".

I can see all the file system as it was in windows 2000 ..so when I go to

c:\programfiles\ and I run the application from there

nothing happens.

Is there any kind of utility or setup that will allow me to

run all my pre-existing Apps on Win 2K in Win XP? or Do i need to re-install

them?

Unless you did an upgrade (which as I said, isn't possible) the apps

aren't installed in XP and can *not* be run. Yes, you need to

reinstall them.

**I was just wondering is there any way where I can retain all my

application as it was in windows 2000 but under os xp

if not how can I fix going back to windows 2000 os and keep the things as it

was before. Thanks in advance for your help
