I've just got my PC's clean - or in the process of doing so - and almost there. I have the option to add service pack 3 but have hear stories advising of problems with it. Is this over-reaction? - should I go ahead anyway?

The last thing I want is to start the whole process again;)

Personally I'd wait Steve until it's included in auto updates mate.

I don't have it at the moment and I intend to wait.

I myself have tried it Wolfey and don't seem to experience any problems. Moreover, I think Microsoft has started including them in the Automatic Updates package so its only a matter of time before you are switched to it. Anyways, the security patches and fixes do make it a tad bit safer and as I far as I have seen, there are no performance issues. So all that criticism is probably over hyped. :)

Equivalent to a babe? - now wasn't that a movie about a pig? - lol. I'll need more convincing than that though - what is SO special about it - in fact I posed the same question elsewhere.

Ask MS and they'll give you a million reasons why it's soooo special.

As I said, don't update anything unless there is a specific need to do so. If you're having a particular problem, then a particular update may be a possibility, otherwise don't fix what isn't broken.

This is spot on, the same with BIOS updates - dont just do it for the sake of it unless there is something in the update be it a service pack or BIOS update that you NEED in order for the system to work - it normally takes any service pack 6 months to get fully tested - WAIT until then unless you NEED something specific.

IE 7 lol (just my personal opinion)

Consider Firefox Steve, I've used it for years, it's the net equivalent of a Babe.

Mozilla Firefox in English | Mozilla Europe

Well Put! lol

Totally Agree

Haven't used Ie for yeeaars!

Firefox so much nicer to use. I find a bit more responsive, and the skins you can add to change the format of the window does it for me !

Never use Ie explorer unless I have to... ie for an online scan that requires ie.

But I guess - just like babes, its a matter of taste ;)... You don't marry the first girl you meet tho! :D

SP-3 is available via auto updates. I have a machine that I'm working on. It came in with SP-1. I loaded SP-2 and did all the updates. Then I set AutoUpdate to Notify, but not download updates automatically. Every time I start this thing, I get a notification that there are updates ready - and the update listed is SP-3.

So did you update it to SP3 or are you still waiting for the right moment? :)

I haven't updated this one yet. No reason, I just have been working other issues on it.

I've installed SP-3 on at least 2 machines that I can remember. There were no issues after doing the update. As I recall when SP-2 came out, there weren't any issues (at least none that affected me and folks I knew at the time).

So its in the same class as XP Service Pack 2, right? I mean its not as erred and unstable as it is rumored to be? :)

Well I procured SP3 this very afternoon Goku and, as you stated, there has been nothing untoward as yet.

Thank you. :)

Thanks Wolfey. Glad to see more people are getting over its inflated disrepute. :)

I take back what i said about XP-3 being available in Windows auto updates. What I saw in this machine was .net Framework SP-3, not Windows XP, SP-3.

Well I posted about this in the SHOP, but will also post this here.

If anyone is willing to take on a challenge - review this entire list and explain in detail every single fix and why it does not apply to your system.

List of fixes that are included in Windows XP Service Pack 3

The point I'm making is that it is not reasonable to ask a home user to decide if their privacy and security is at risk by having to digest this type of information. I used to work on a Security Team and that was part of my job to review all this information and then explain why it did or did not affect our systems and then provide that information back to a committee. It was not a fun or easy task and took months to complete.

If you're not able to provide solid verifiable proof that a user does not require the SP then in my opinion you should not be telling them they don't need it. If in fact their private financial data is stolen and their bank account cleaned out and it was then proven that one of the fixes in the SP would have prevented that, then how would you explain your position to that user?

To me there is a big difference between a user not updating their system because they don't want to or didn't think of it vs. someone telling them they should not update it, unless they can provide proof they don't need it. Which is possible that they don't need it, but I don't think anyone is really going to spend that much time analyzing a single system for someone that don't even really know.
