PC spec : ASUS 2.4Ghz ; RAM 2 GB ; Video card : Nvidia8800

System : Windows XPsp3

I cannot re-instal my new CanonScan 4400f scanner.I've gone thru the uninstal / reinstal process about 6 times so far following on-screen instructions exactly which includes not connecting to a power / USB point until after the software has finished .

When I try to do a simple copying job this message comes up : ''unable to obtain TWAIN source , check all connections & restart''

What is twain please ,? I am totally mystified.

Hi John.

I found this solution:

Check to make sure that Still Image Service is running and Startup Type is set to Automatic.

Hello and Welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help John Lay. :)

Try both the solutions provided above by Seth and if they still don't work then have a look at this article from the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

"Could Not Enable TWAIN Source" or "There Is No Scanner Found" Error Messages Are Displayed

Hope you are able to fix your problem soon. Good Luck. :)

I'm still at the opening stages of using this scanner ( CanoScan 4400F ).The path indicated in the Canon 'Quick Start Guide is :in Windows XP,select Start / All programs / Arcsoft PhotoStudio 5.5 / then click PhotoStudio 5.5 ; from the file menu click Select Source and select the scanner model from the pop-up window...........................the problem is that this pop-up window is blank ! ! do I need to re-instal again ?

Hello John. Have you tried what Seth tried? If you have, then what results did you get. On another note, I think you do need to reinstall the scanner or better yet, just its drivers. Then try again and see if you can get further or not. By the way, what happened with the Twain Source error? :)

Obtain the latest drivers from the Canon site, then uninstall the current Canon driver/software.

Now try the install again and see what happens.

could not enable TWAIN source

Seth , Goku, DenisPetrov , thank you all but no success yet .

I shall now try to download the latest drivers from the Canon site ; do I store these in 'my docs' before doing the uninstal /re-instal bit again ?

Hi

You can save them in "My Documents" it wont affect the uninstall.

Go to Add/Remove Programs to uninstall the software and then install the new software you downloaded.

could not enable TWAIN source

OK

I've downloaded the driver from Canon (S6A00mux.exe) & it's sitting in 'my dods.'

I double -click on it & a winzip window pops up asking me where to browse to,there are 147 files in this download & I'm guessing these are the right ones;I'm no tech. as you will have gathered ,so what do I do next please ?

After you have uninstalled the old software go to that folder where you downloaded the new software and look for a file called setup(can vary) and double-click that file and follow the on screen instructions.

Tell us if you get stuck.

I've downloaded & double-clicked on 2 drivers,(one for scangear, one for toolbox),followed onscreen instructions for both; having first un-installed both (canonscan & c'scan toolbox).I also phoned Canon helpdesk who verified the correct drivers s there are different ones depending on whether my system (XP home) is 32 or 64bit.I think mine is 32 bit, how do I check this please ? still getting the same TWAIN error message though.

For that, there is a simple test John. Read on for more information.

How to determine whether your computer is running a 32-bit version or a 64-bit version of the Windows operating system

Perform the test, install the appropriate drivers and see if you still get the "Twain Error" message. Good Luck. :)
