The CPU is held in place by a seperate clip - you do not have to take the CPU out when the Heatsink is removed ;)

I'm aware of that, but the paste may have hardened causing the heatsink to stick to the cpu. In such a case, improper removal (and possibly any sort of HS removal) will force the cpu out of the socket. Irreversible pin damage often results of such.

 

Given the above, compressed air will do the job just fine and without any risk. Especially for someone who has little to no experience in such things.

Thank you for all the valuable support and advice. I will try to be as careful as possible when cleaning the fans and the heatsink. Btw I have opened up my pc several times in order to install new hardware but never though of cleaning it out.lol.

Just use the can for cleaning under current circumstances. We will talk of cleaning procedures by opening the case after you have done so. Please let us know the results as soon as possible. :)
