Windows shutting down when booted up

Recommended Posts

At first, this was an intermittent problem, but now every time I boot up, I

get the error message that Windows has experienced a problem and shuts down,

the programme then reboots itself and so the loop continues. If I go into

Safe Mode, Control Panel, Admin Tools, Computer Management, Event Viewer,

Application, I can see the problem with all the error messages. When I double

click one of these, it says: Event ID 1000, Description: Faulting application

services.exe.

Version 0.0.0.0. fault address 0x00a25592. Every Error event shows a

different Version number. It says I should click on:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. but of course I can't do that on

my Deskotp in Safe Mode. I've tried the address on this Laptop and it won't

go there. From the information I've given, you probably realise that I'm no

"techie". Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Can you please post a complete copy of the Event Viewer Error Report.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double

click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a

button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event

Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of

the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from

Event Viewer.

From SafeMode rt click MyComputer>select Properties>Advanced>Startup and

Recovery-Settings>Uncheck the

Automatically Restart box. Next time you bootup you may get a blue

screen with error message. Post message back here.

Hi Gerry, thanks for this. I still have a problem p probably me not

understanding. I can get as far as clicking the "double page" icon but of

course, in Safe Mode, I can't email it. All attempts to click the icon and

then paste to a CD failed. If that would have worked, I could have sent it

via this Laptop. Is there a way to do that? Thanks again.

Re: Windows shutting down when booted up

Hi Barry, thanks for this. If this is a duplicate, please forgive me. I

posted this once and got the message that the site was busy. I'll send this

anyhow. I got as far as unchecking the Automatic restart box, then clicked

OK. Got the message: "Windows cannot send administrative alerts unless the

Alerter service is running." I went through the procedure they described, but

found the Alerter is already set to automatic. Perhaps it won't work in Safe

Mode? Is there anything else I might try? Thanks.

Jim

Paste the Report into any text / document file and copy the file to a

floppy disk or other media and transfer to Laptop? I prefer using Word

to Notepad as it formats better. I now use a Kingston Data Bar rather

than CD or floppy disk to transfer files between computers.

Re: Windows shutting down when booted up

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by

allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on

the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,

Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before

Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure even after you have

solved the problem as it's better disabled. Check for variants of the

Stop Error message.

An alternative is to keep pressing the F8 key during Start-Up and select

option - Disable automatic restart on system failure.

Re: Windows shutting down when booted up

Thanks again Gerry. I did the last part of your last suggestion. As I was

doing this, my Desktop has been on and is still on. I don't think I've really

done anything yet to cure the problem, so perhaps it has just gone back to

being an intermittent fault. I'll let you know. Much obliged. Jimbo

Re: Windows shutting down when booted up

Jimbo

PMStudio would appear to come woth Roxio Easy CD. This is not, however,

the Error Report you referred to earlier. All programmes occasionally

cause problems. The question is do they keep occuring or are they one

off? If you repeat what you were doing when this error arose do you get

the same error?

If the error keeps repeating you should try uninstalling Easy CD and

reinstalling.

Re: Windows shutting down when booted up

Gerry, could you do me another service? There are loads of these errors in

the Event file. Here is another. Would you just check and see if this one

gives another result? Also, when I booted up the desktop this time, I got the

usual: Service and controller app encountered a problem and needs to close.

for infor on this error, click here. Did that and got: Error signature

$zAppName : services.exe $zAppVer : 5.1.2600.2180

$zModName : unknown $zModVer : 0.0.0.0

offset : 00da5592

To view technical info about this report, c.ick here. Did that, got:

The following files will be included in this error report

C:\DOCUME~1\JIMGLY~1\LOCAL~1\TEMP\WEBb0d5,dir00\services.exe.mdmp

C:\DOCUME~1\JIMGLY~1\LOCAL~1\TEMP\WEBb0d5,dir00\accompat.txt

All gobbledegook to me. I don't know if oyu can make anything of it. Thanks

again. Jimbo

Re: Windows shutting down when booted up

Another bit of information: I found pmstudio.cfg. The only thing I could find

out about it was that it was created on 16th Jan. Looked in the diary and

sure enough, I'd tried to put a TV program onto disk using Roxio. I've never

used it since, so I'm just going to delete this file and see where we go from

there. I've been thinking whilst I've been writing and realise that this is a

pretty new problem, so I could be wrong. Stiil, here goes!

Re: Windows shutting down when booted up

You need to post full copies of Event Viewer Reports using the copy

method discussed earlier.

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements?

Deleting files is not the correct way to resolve problems. You need to

uninstall through Add / Remove Programs in Control Panel.

Re: Windows shutting down when booted up

I'm doing exactly that now, because guess what, I can get online with my

desktop. I'm still getting the "encountered a problem and needs to close"

except it hasn't closed. So here's what copied when I clicked on the "double

page" icon in Events:Event Type: Error

Event Source: Application Error

Event Category: (100)

Event ID: 1004

Date: 01/08/2007

Time: 14:52:26

User: N/A

Computer: JIMDESKTOP

Description:

Faulting application services.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, faulting module

unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00da5592.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at

I'll also have a go at getting rid of that file, but I couldn't find it

anywhere except with the Search and I tried to delete it from there. Could

something I've done so far in trying these various things have slowed down my

computer at all? It now seems to take a very long time between "Intel Inside

- Pentium 4" to the Black "Windows" screen. Apart from that and the Error

message on bootup, the desktop seems to be working.

Re: Windows shutting down when booted up

Gerry

I'm using PCDefense, which uses BitDefender to check for viruses. I also

have a couple of Spyware programmes. I changed to after having a few problems

with McAfee. I don't know how happy I am with it.

Re: Windows shutting down when booted up

Gerry

Something must have worked. I no longer get the error message on bootup now

and the desktop seems to be working OK. I still have to wait 90 secs. between

"Intel Inside - Pentium 4" and the First Windows screen instead of about 15

secs. Even if I can't sort that, I'm better off than when you first answered.

Thanks again.

Jimbo.

Re: Windows shutting down when booted up

Gerry

Probably my final post on this one. I saw another post entitled Computer

runs slow and had a look at that. Followed some of the suggestions and now my

computer runs faster than ever. However, it was your help and patience that

got me around the major proble. Thanks so much.
