Hi,

I have an AMD Sempron 3000+ with an Asrock K7VT4A Pro motherboard and 2GB of Elixir Ram.Running XP Home SP3.

Every now and again (like this morning) it will tell me the system has failed to boot several times and will boot default bios.

Its a really strange one.

Its been off all night due to me being at work!

Ive replaced the CMOS battery and its still doing it.

Only every few days though.

I'm stumped!

Can anyone shed some light?

Thanks for looking.

Hi,yeah basically it says "The system has failed to boot several times before.Press F2 to set up or bios will load default in x amount of seconds"

It only happens every now and again too.

Sorry for the delay Peugeotianin as I was away for a while. From the error message you state, it seems that there seems to be some problem in the BIOS configuration. Try and restore it to default settings by pulling out the CMOS battery. Leave the battery out for fifteen minutes and then put it back in. That should hopefully reset the BIOS settings and fix the problem too. :)

A stupid question - but are you using a Dell computer? Please post back the results and the answer as soon as possible. :)

Let us know when you have done it. :)

Note: When you take out the battery, all BIOS settings will be restored to defaults. Therefore, you might have to configure some settings manually like the Boot Order again.

Can you also check that the HDD that has the OS on it is on its OWN power lead from the PSU - no fans inbetween or anything else - sounds like an intermitten problem with the PSU or MOBO.

Have you tried one stick of RAM and if it does it try the other seperately?

There are so many things that can cause this its a process of elimination - is there a build up of heat in the PC - try cleaning all the fans - is the North and South bridge passively cooled, if there are fans on them check they are spinning and check the one on the GPU too whilst you are there - hope this helps, try the above and if not come back to us please

Right an update, day before yesterday it totally failed to boot.It powered up but wouldnt do anything else.

I took it to my local pc chappie and he had a good look for me.

Turned out there was loads of heat paste all over the cpu chip I think he said which was causing heat transfer across it.

Anyway its been fine since I got it back yesterday so fingers crossed.

Glad it sorted -

for future reference for everyone - if you have a recent Intel CPU - you only need as much TIM as a grain of rice and then use some cling film over your finger to spread it out and then attach the HSF ;)
