Guest Smiley188 Posted August 2, 2007 Posted August 2, 2007 i think i accidentally deleted the administrator account Now I cannot install any programs. A check of the Control Panel under "User Accounts" indicates there are no users. When i typed in "control userpasswords2" in the "Run", i received a message as follows: "You must be a member of the Administrators Group on this computer to open User Accounts. You are logged on as [computername]\user, and this account is not a member of the Administrators Group. To continue, type the user name and password of an administrator on this computer....." To change the password without opening the User Account, press CTRL-Alt-Del and click "Change Password" ==> note when i press these keys, i only see the task manager screen.... Please help!!!! thank you Any suggestions?

I bet the missing information needed to analyze your problem is WHICH version of Windows XP you are using. I bet you're using the Home version of Windows XP. You don't get to do admin functions in a normal load of Windows XP *HOME*. You have to reboot into Safe Mode to login as the Administrator. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/292742/en-us http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290109/en-us

I tried rebooting in safe mode but there is no prompt for me to log in as administrator...(and i don't have any password, even though i own the computer....) To access it in XP Home, go into Safe Mode. When you get to the Welcome Screen in Safe Mode, do Ctrl-Alt-Del twice. This will get you the classic logon box. Type the username "Administrator" without the quotes. The default password is a blank. 2. Once in the system, create a second user account with administrative privileges for when you need to make changes to your system and don't want to go into Safe Mode. This assumes your regular user account is Limited. 3. If the above doesn't match your situation - and you haven't provided a lot of information about the history of this machine, etc. - then please see: User Accounts applet is completely blank - http://windowsxp.mvps.org/useracc.htm Malke -- Elephant Boy Computers http://www.elephantboycomputers.com "Don't Panic!" Guest Smiley188 Posted August 4, 2007 Posted August 4, 2007 Re: "No Accounts Appear in Control Panel > User Accounts" Just to update everyone - it seems that i had accidentally deleted the administrator account. I called the Microsoft Technical Support Helpline and they told me to install the Windows XP Home CD to repair the Windows XP software....and it kept hanging at the installation. the whole computer ended up unusable and I ultimately got an IT consultant in to fix the computer, reformat the c drive and reinstall all the programs again. The networking is going smoothly now....but definitely, going through this whole exercise cost me a lot of $ (hired two different IT guys, paid for Windows Technical support, bought a wireless adapter that i was later told i didn't need, and had days of stress......) thanks for the tips. I do appreciate them anyway.... "Malke" wrote: > Smiley188 wrote: > > thank you. You are right, I am using XP Home.
