Guest Mark G. Posted August 2, 2007 Posted August 2, 2007 Not sure that XP Pro can do this, but if it can, then great and please explain how. If not, does anyone know of any good, free utilities that do so? What I am after is something that can do two things. First, give me a list of the last XX (being 50, 100, etc..) files that have changed including their paths and date changed. Secondly, something that will and can monitor specified folders/files for changes and then alert me via pop-up and/or email alert. I believe these two functions are something we all can use. I did some Goggling and ran across something that does the first tasks, but looked like spyware so I passed on it. Any recommendations? Thanks much for any input you can provide.

Guest Mark G. Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Re: Anything that does this? I guess I do not understand after reading this how it complies with want I am after in full effect? I see sort of what it does by creating a log I am guessing if someone messes with those files/folders, but I am unsure if it actually does what I am after. Is some clarity needed as maybe I do not understand that or is there something more well suited to do what I am after? Thanks for the input! If the built-in auditing ability doesn't do what you want, then I'm afraid you'll just need to Google around for third-party auditing programs. Since I don't know *why* you want this information (your end goal), that's all I can suggest. Perhaps if you explain why you wish to do this someone will have a better solution. On the first task, I downloaded something from tucows, but haven't installed it, so I can't recommend it, except to say it doesn't strike me as spyware. <shrug> 'Downloads - eXpress FreshFiles Finder 1.1.0 Freeware Software' (http://www.tucows.com/preview/506220) I've found Tucows to be a pretty good site for reputable stuff. [n.1] "Main features include, but not limited by: recursive processing subfolders, finding the specified number of files or files modified after specified time." On the second task, I'm really lazy about searching for new tools/utilities, and then leary about installing them (case in point, previous paragraph). To analogise, I'm forever trying to work on my brakes with the hammer I already have, rather than locating a punch. Feel free to roll your eyes and laugh at me. Really. Since this is semi-facetious, I'm not going to do a bunch of testing, so if you're crazy enough to try it, you'll probably have to tweak a bit. You could play with something like ... Robocopy. Use /mon. /L of course. And /Tee the output. (I assume this will spawn a new command prompt window if there's none open.) When the dos prompt window appears, that's your popup! [image: http://www.dashlaw.com/emoticons/hyperlach.gif] But seriously, I really can't imagine it's not possible to find such a utility on pcmagwhatever, tucows, etc. Maybe it would be best to try to help you with your searching skill? What search are you using? (I hope that doesn't sound snide. I don't mean it to; just trying to help.) [n.1] A little trick for finding freeware on tucows and other sites with those darned sponsored links you can't filter out when you click "freeware only." Google -> "whatever-you-want-to-search-for" freeware site:tucows.com ;) Men are like campsites. Women should leave them better than they found them. - My wife
