Why would a web hosting company want to mask their linux servers with

a win proxy box? When you query the server is replies as having

Microsoft-IIS/6.0 when it is in fact running linux redhat 9.0.

Are they trying to hide something?

Some people do this to avoid hackers,

if your machine reports it is something it's not, then it makes it just that

little harder to break into =)

It's a very old and very effective trick :)

Re: Windows Proxy Servers and Linux

I found out the answer from a friend. Apparently Microsoft paid the

hosting company to use MS servers but the hosting company wasnt

prepared to do that. So for over a year now when they are audited, on

a monthly basis, it makes them appear compliant with their agreement.

I was told, rumor has it, that the deal involved 2-3 million dollars

to literally buy market share for MS.

It would seem they both have no problem with deceit and a big problem

with integrity. I wonder how Redhat would respond if they found out?
