Basically when i turn on my pc, it loads fine up to that screen with the black background and says windows xp with that blue loading bar.

Then it suddenly freezes on it after a few "scrolls" then it very very slowly starts scrolling again but its so dam slow as if its lagging. I left it for a few mins but just gave up.

Anyone know what might be causing this?

Thanks.

Hi Noobz.

I suspect that the slowness is being caused by a physical problem on the hard drive, but try this:

Start the computer and keep tapping the F8 key. At the boot menu, try Last Known Good Configuration. If that doesn't work, go back to the menu and try Safe Mode.

Do you have an XP cd? Do you need personal data off the drive?

Boot to the XP CD and choose "R" for the Recovery Console. At the command prompt, type in chkdsk /r (space between the K and the /) and press enter.

When it's complete, type in exit. As the computer turns back on, remove the cd.

No. It will just fix any file errors or bad sectors.

Hello and Welcome to FPCH Noobz. :)

You have to take the option C:\. Just enter the drive letter on which you have Windows installed. :)

Then enter the number 1 so that it can log in into that installation of Windows. After that, you will be asked for your Administrator password. Type in so and then continue with Seth's instructions. Hope that helps. Good Luck. :)

Yes, normally it's "1".

Chances are there won't be an admin password. If not, leave it blank and just hit enter.

Dam apparently there is a password.

I have no idea what it is because it was set up by someone else.

Is there any other way?

You need the password for the Administrator account from whoever set it up. Unfortunately, we cannot help you with lost or forgotten passwords as they are a part of our policies. You can either choose to know the password from the person who set up your Operating System or choose a third party utility like Ultimate Boot CD to scan your Boot sectors. Any of the above options is preferable and equally reliable. Let us know what you decide. :)

Since the password is only being used to run hard drive error checking and not access the system, I'll give you your two options.

1) You can install the drive as a secondary on another computer and run the error checking.

2) I'm sending you a Private Message for this option.

How to Build the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows

The instructions on using various applications included can be found in the included documentation. I am sorry that I couldn't help you with the password since its against our policies to provide solutions to password problems regardless of the motive. Let us know the results as soon as possible. :)
