Hi, I have this laptop with windows xp and when i turn it on, the compaq logo shows on the screen, but then the screen just stays black. The laptop is still switched on, but it doesnt seem to be attempting to carry on loading after this.

Any ideas what might be wrong?

Hello and Welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help Aidacuk. :)

Have you tried entering the BIOS? If not, then try it by pressing the F2, Delete or F10 key during the Logo screen. When the Compaq logo flashes, there will be an instruction that will say something like:

Press _ key to Enter BIOS

Press the required key and find the setting that configures the Boot order. Set it so that it looks like the following.

1. Hard Drive.

2. CD / DVD Drive.

3. Floppy Drive / External Drive.

Save the BIOS settings and reboot. See if it helps resolving the problem or not. Good Luck. :)

Hi aidacuk;

Please wait for our techs to get back to you on this but in the mean time I can tell you that I don't think this looks good.

The BIOS has nothing to do with your hard drive. With Compaq tapping the F10 key or pressing it at exactly the right time should get you into the BIOS. Try it repeatedly and carefully to ensure you can't get in. This might be just that you are not doing it quite right. It can be tricky.

This sounds like the issue but if you really can't get into the BIOS then your chip is most likely bad and that's bad news.

Again, try to get into the BIOS and wait for the techs to reply.

Aidacuk, do exactly what Randy says as not being able to enter into the BIOS is not a very good omen. On the other hand, it might just be Windows XP. Read the following article to know more about it and how to troubleshoot the problem.

Computer stops responding with a black screen when you start Windows XP

Try the troubleshooting steps suggested and see if it helps or not. Let us know how it goes. Good Luck. :)
