Yes I have installed SP1 and also have assured I have all current updates. Thier is one thing i have noticed is, that I CAN open the control panel in safe mode. It seems like some driver issue or something> got me stumped!

Let's look at what's running on your computer.

Please download the latest version of HijackThis from Trend Micro and click on Download Hijack This Installer and save it to your desktop.

  • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install HijackThis.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in Notepad. Include this log in your next reply.

Notes:

Do not use the AnalyseThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.

Do not have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless, or required for your computer to run like it should.

That would wipe out my Noton ghost backup program Yes?

Yes, sorry. I saw the log was incomplete as Symantec's Live Update is still there. I missed the ghost so to speak. Forget about that tool for now.

I'm looking at the log right now...

The log is fine.

In Safe mode, needless drivers and third party programs are not loaded. Since opening Control Panel, doesn't require a driver, I'm going on the issue being caused by a program.

Try this as a test:

Click on the Vista start icon and type in msconfig in the search field. In msconfig go into the Startup tab and click on Disable All, then Apply>Ok. Restart the computer and test Control Panel (do not open up the internet for this test).

After the test, go back to msconfig, click on the Start Up tab and put a check in only the BitDefender entries, Norton Ghost, and Defender.

You have 2 instance of the program Hijack This on your computer Metalpros.

Use the latest version as posted in your initial HJT log and re-post a new log.

You will find it beneficial to delete the old version.

The log is fine, but you didn't recheck all the BitDefender entries or Window's Defender in msconfig. Specifically, these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Defender] %ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe -hide

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [bitDefender Antiphishing Helper] "C:\Program Files\BitDefender\BitDefender 2008\IEShow.exe"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [bDAgent] "C:\Program Files\BitDefender\BitDefender 2008\bdagent.exe"

Please try a System Restore to a time just prior to when the problem began:
