Vista Search

XP had search options in which you could run a search for all pictures, all documents, or all music. It was a great search function, but I don't see it in Vista's search.

 

Also, I go to search my invoices and can find what I want only if my keyword is in the invoice title. For example, hundreds of my invoices have "superantispyware" as part of my work description in the invoice, but the search for superantispyware turns up nothing.

The same occurs even when I right click on my invoices folder and run the search.

 

I get the feeling the problem is inherent to the search indexing.

 

 

BTW- I average two calls a day in which Vista users ask if they can go back to XP. Today I received four.

I'm definetly not a fan of Vista search either seth. Since I read your first post search is still running after entering .jpg. Like you I have indexing turned off so this may take quite a bit more time yet.

What if you wanted to run a search for all pictures, regardless of the picture file type? (like in XP)

 

Can you find that option? Because I can't.

No I don't think so unless you put all the pics in My Pictures then use Photo Gallery.

 

By the way look at the time on your first post. Now look at the time on this one. I'm still running the search on non-indexed locations.

CMD.EXE will find what you want if it's by file name :D

It appears Vista search is still searching but I think not. It tends to do that on big searches sometimes. And to think I was only searching for .jpeg. lol

 

Granted Vista and I have a huge amount but it does say something to me about non-indexed file searching. Not exactly an improvement based on my usage since early last year.

I think you might be right Ron. We'll need even more third party tools since for every one thing Vista added it seems two things were taken away.

Correction. Vista search finally completed after 3 hours.

 

I would still have to search for the other pic file types though.

 

I think I'll depend on orginization instead of search like I always have.

When WinXP came out the SEARCH feature that searches for a word or

phrase inside the files became unreliable. This is becasue it won't search

certain older versions of files that Micorsoft no longer supports. A similar

thing might be occurring with Vista.

 

I discovered this annoying issue when I converted some Win98 PCs

to WinXP and afterwards customer could not locate documents

using the SEARCH feature that searches for a word or phrase inside

the files. I located the desired files manually and resaved them using

a newer version of WORD and then the search feature worked as

it should.

 

See, these are the kinds of things that I suspect MS does on purpose

to FORCE consumers to buy newer versions of MS products. I have been

burned so many times by these tactics that I've learned to avoid using

all MS products whenever possible.

 

Since the SEARCH feature is no longer reliable for searcing for a word or

phrase inside the files we need to find a 3rd party search utility that

willl work in WinXP as well as Vista.

I still it's an indexing problem. I disabled mine as I didn't want my hard drive being thrashed.

When Vista completes a search, there is an option to search again but this time "Inside the file contents", which should take a heck of a lot longer than a search within the file names only. Yet, it doesn't take any longer:confused: but still doesn't find anything.

 

I'll experiment with it more later on.

Ron, thanks for the referral on V-GREP, I downloaded it and tried it

quickly and it seems to work nicely. It seems a bit limited in that it

only searches a target folder and it's sub folders but still very useful.

 

Does the pay version allow you to specify multiple drives and folders to search?

 

What do you like about the pay version over the free one?

 

Perhaps we should begin a new thread on this topic.

Vista was annoying me, so for the last couple of days I've been using my XP system. I'm going back to Vista tomorrow and will experiment further.
