Hi guys,

We have the Xp home edition and recently the pc has been freezing alot.

Sometimes on start up or sometimes when you have been on it a while.

We took it out, cleaned the fan ect.. as we thought it was over heating.

Still the problem was there.

I used the Fujitsu recovery disk on it to repair it but that hasn't worked either.

I then formatted it, but still not working.

Now when i start it up it just goes round in a loop without actually loading windows.

Any ideas on what it could be? or how i can fix it?

Thanks in advance

Hello and Welcome to FPCH Boothy. :)

It seems that the Operating System is corrupted or more importantly the Boot.ini is corrupted. Do you see any Blue Screen or error message before the computer restarts or does it restart without any warning. Also, do you have your Windows XP disk? Please answer the questions as soon as possible. :)

So you have reinstalled the OS?

- you will need to set the HDD as the PRIMARY BOOT DEVICE - if the CD is the primary then it loops - if the disk is still in

- you have taken the XP disk out?

What's the last thing you see on the screen before the computer restarts itself?

Nope there is no cd in there.

It doesn't really restart itself

just never gets to the windows screen, just keeps going through the motions of starting up until i give up and turn off the pc.

There is no error or blue screen just the regular ones.

Thanks

Also.

Before the looping began, my partner was on the pc and it began aking strange noises, then a blue screen appeared saying to re-start the computer.

It was when i did this that the looping started.

Thanks

I think that the Kernel32.dll file is damaged. To correct this, perform the following instructions provided in the Knowledge Base article.

Windows XP logon screen does not appear and the computer continuously restarts

Let us know if it helps or not. Good Luck. :)

It sounds like the install didnt complete - please try running it again and keep an eye on whats happening and post back if you get any blue screens or not -

you need to go into the BIOS and set the first boot device to CDROM,

when it goes through the motions of loading windows it reboots a few times - just leave it all until you get to the options of setting the Networks and personal preferences - once thats done it will load the desktop.

When this is all done when you turn the PC off or restart you need to make sure that you switch the Primary boot device back to HDD

Ok, so i've just spoke to my partner who says we don't have the Windows XP cd.

Is there anyway around this or do we need to buy it again?

If so, any idea's where we can get a good price?

Thanks

What was supplied with the PC - a recovery disk is the same thing it has the operating system on it -

or in some more modern cases there is a recovery partition on the HDD itself when you boot the PC are there 2 options normally one saying

Recovery Section

and the Other saying XP Home edition or to that effect.

Hey guys,

Ok so i printed out the helpsheet and attempted it this morning.

I put the recovery disk in, typed R for the repair.

Then when it came up c:/> (Not sure if thats right but something like that)

I would usually type in chkdsk /r but instead i did cd system32 like the helpsheet says and it came up as 'not valid'

also when i was doing this the pc was making a clicking noise.

Any idea whats happened?

Thanks

A clicking noise is normally the HDD working away or trying to (if its the latter its broke)

if you boot from the recovery disk it should just go through the motions like an operating system install

Sorry to be a pain but i'm really confused as to what i need to do as i've had replies from a few different people.

When i boot from the recovery cd do i press R for repair?

Then what do i need to do?

Thanks again

There should be 2 options repair and reinstall.

if repair doesnt work you need to reinstall
