Goku Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 OK, from what I have gathered, you have not been asked to list your system specifications. Lets try to start with this and see if it can shed any light on your problem. Please download the following utility and perform the below instructions. System Spec 1. Download the executable version of the program and save it to your desktop. 2. Open the utility and you will see a list of your system specifications. 3. Click on the Edit toolbar and select Copy to Clipboard Ctrl + C. 4. Press Ctrl + V to post the specifications in your next reply. Please post the required information as soon as possible. :) -- Goku Quote
zism Posted August 14, 2008 Author Posted August 14, 2008 hi could not run this scan. It siad my firewall was blocking it and asked me to temporarily turn it off. I did this and same problem!! any ideas? Quote
Seth Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 I doubt the drive is failing since it's fine in Safe Mode. I'd try what Kelly suggested: When you booted to Safe Mode with Networking, you were running without anti-virus/spyware protection. I think at this point, you need to evaluate the risk of running unprotected for a short time to check to see if PC Guard is causing the problem. Otherwise, I'd back up any important data and reinstall Vista. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Goku Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 Please disable the Firewall. We need your system specifications to provide you with the appropriate instructions. -- Goku Quote
zism Posted August 15, 2008 Author Posted August 15, 2008 disabled windows firewall and it let me in! however I accidentally clicked to scan network and that was taking forever. I stopped scan hoping to restart for this computer only but it wont let me view this option! I ahve shut down and restarted and it still says network scan is in progress. sorry I dont know what to do :( Quote
Goku Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 Are you saying that you accidentally clicked the Network tab in System Spec and now it is giving you the error message? If it is so, then I am sorry to say but you are having a lot of fishy problems. It would be easier and much more time saving to perform a complete reinstall. To do so, you might find the following article useful. How to Downgrade Windows Vista to XP I don't normally recommend this solution but the problems you are facing are very severe. It would be more sensible to perform a complete reinstall. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Let us know if you want to choose that path. :) -- Goku Quote
Seth Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 Well wev'e got over 80 points and are going nowhere fast, and I see no point in seeing the system specs, as the computer runs fine in Safe Mode. zism, Do you have a Vista DVD, and do you have your important information backed up? Reason I ask is, I think you should do a clean install of Vista, which is very easy to do. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. zism Posted August 15, 2008 Author Posted August 15, 2008 no I am not getting an error message it is just trying to scan an entire network Quote
Seth Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 (edited) I just reserached the R20. It should have come with a recovery DVD, or you can start the recovery right from within Windows: This R20 came with Windows Vista Home Premium. A version of the R20 with XP Pro has also been introduced. The software supplied with the R20 has been listed above. “Bloatware” is limited compared with some brands and the main constituent is the Microsoft Office 2007 trial. A trial version of McAfee Security Center is also provided. A few comments on the less common software are given below: CyberLink DVD Suite which contains PowerDVD 7 Samsung Play AVStation which is a multi-media video / music / photo viewing package Samsung AV Station Now which is started using the small button next to the on button but seems to end up in Vista (the XP version is a separate system) Samsung Recovery Solution II: This creates system restore points on a hidden partition on the hard disk. It appears to include some useful features, such as selectively restoring the operating system. http://www.notebookreview.com/assets/22842.jpg http://www.notebookreview.com/assets/22844.jpg Edited August 15, 2008 by Seth Quote Need help with your computer problems? Goku Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 Hello Zism. With all the problems you have been having, I would recommend you to downgrade to XP. From the reference of this post, I understand that you still have your XP discs. Vista is very demanding on resources and doesn't seem to run adequately on your system. Just let us know if you want to continue to XP or not. -- Goku Quote
zism Posted August 16, 2008 Author Posted August 16, 2008 sounds like I might be best to downgrade! will I need to back everything up to do this? Quote
Goku Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 If you have any important files to backup, then please back them up on external media like flash drives or CD / DVDs. As for your softwares, make a list so that you can download them later at your convenience. After you have done the above, just downgrade to Windows XP and you will hopefully have less or no problems. Report back when you are done. Good Luck. :) -- Goku Quote
Seth Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 The R20 has a dual core with 1 GB, so I'm unclear as to the purpose of downgrading to XP. Especially since the laptop has a Vista recovery built in, and zism may have a big problem in trying to activate XP unless it is a retail copy. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Goku Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 Hello Seth. From reference of this log, I understand that Zism has 766 MB RAM. Correct me there if I am wrong. Besides, I understand that Vista runs smoothly on a system with 1 GB RAM and therefore it is not worth upgrading a system simply to gain the Vista experience. Also, in accordance with Zism's this post, I understand that he is really desperate to get his system working and is ready to downgrade to XP if he has to. As we have ruled out Malware problems, I think it is the Operating System. Of course, it might be hardware incompatibilities too so if thats the case, Dalo or you might want to guide him accordingly. Please let us know if you have an alternate opinion on the problem. :) -- Goku Quote
Seth Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 The R20 review says it has 1GB, but I'll take your word for it:) Still, if zism has an OEM copy of XP (likely), he won't be able to activate it. Then he's dead in the water unless he has a Vista DVD. 766MB will be fine for general computing, and I just think using the built in Vista recovery would be a safer bet in all aspects. zism Posted August 17, 2008 Author Posted August 17, 2008 okay now I am totally confused as to what to do!! PS - I am a she!! :p Quote
Goku Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 Sorry for the sex confusion, Zism. :) If you have the licence key for your XP discs, then format Vista and go ahead with XP. As I said, it is not really worth the hassle to get Vista up and running. If you don't have the key to your XP discs or they are an OEM copy, then please let us know and we will look for alternate solutions. This is because unregistered and OEM copies don't work on all computers and therefore may further increase your trouble. Hope that clears your confusion. -- Goku Quote
zism Posted August 18, 2008 Author Posted August 18, 2008 I have the discs but sadly I have searched and cannot find the licence key for them :( any other solution you may have would be great :) Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 They should be under the laptop on a sticker. RandyL Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 Pardon me but I think after 98 posts we need to rehash this again and rethink it. 1. First of all zism you were advised to uninstall your torrent programs and you have not done so. 2. It was suggested by Kelly and me that PCGuard (Radial Point Software) could be the issue and should be temporarily uninstalled and you have not done so. 3. You were asked if your XP disks were OEM or the full version of XP. You did not anser that question. 4. Either way it seems you do not have the key for XP. If it was the retail version it would be with the disks not on your Vista laptop which shipped with Vista. 5. Downgrading to XP on a machine that shipped with Vista is not a good idea anyway. The hardware you have may not have XP drivers. 6. Your system specs especially memory (RAM) is not good for Vista Home Premium. You need more. Upgrade your RAM or have a shop do it for you. It's not expensive. 7. Instead of trying to downgrade Vista to XP I suggest upgrading your RAM to what Vista needs. 8. After upgrading your RAM reinstall Vista if need be. This will cause all programs you installed to be gone. Your machine should then run fine. 9. Reinstall your programs one by one. Then you will find the issue if you have not already figured it out by following the top steps. 10. These steps should make it clear to everyone I hope.
