zism Posted July 1, 2008 Author Posted July 1, 2008 hi the report didnt show anything. I scheduled disk check for next time I powered on but nothing happened! Quote
AdvancedSetup Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 Yes, often Antivirus or other drivers can prevent the CHKDSK from running. So is your system still running very slow? If so, then I do suspect maybe a failing hard drive. Let's try this then to see if we can find any more details or issues. Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges. Close all applications and windows. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post in your reply What DSS will do:create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista. clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives. check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed. Notes: The first time that the Deckard scanner is run, the extra.txt is generated in a minimized window. The second time you will not obtain the extra.txt. You must go to Start=>Run and copy the following "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config in the line and click OK You will receive a pop-up box with options to check for the Main log and Extra Log and Options. . AdvancedSetup Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 Well not much really stands out. The system does appear to not meet recommended minimum requirements for Vista. Did you have XP on this system and the upgrade to Vista? It certainly does not appear to be a system that was sold from a vendor with Vista on it. So from what I can see you either probably have a failing drive which is causing very slow response or the system just is not powerful enough for Vista, in which case if you still have the original Windows XP CD you may want to consider formatting the drive and installing XP. There are some other drive tools you could run and try to determine if its seeing any hard drive failures as well if you like. Quote Need help with your computer problems? zism Posted July 6, 2008 Author Posted July 6, 2008 (edited) hi I bought this laptop last April with Windows Vista pre installed! There is also has a Windows Vista sticker on it. If you can tell me how to uninstall WIndows VIsta I could install XP as I still have the XP discs from my old PC ? Thanks  Edited July 6, 2008 by zism Quote
AdvancedSetup Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 Well I would probably go with using some tools to check out the hard drive. If you were okay with how it ran before then a repair/re-installation of Vista may bring it back to that level, but if it has a bad hard drive then even installing XP won't help much and could prove to be difficult to do if the drive really is failing. Give me some time to find some good tools to test the hard drive. If one of the other members has links to good tools to check the drive that would be help so that I don't have to look for them. zism Posted July 8, 2008 Author Posted July 8, 2008 hi Im afraid I cant see my drive listed on the Samsung site  Quote
AdvancedSetup Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 I think you should be able to run it on the drive even if it's not listed. You need to burn it to a CD though to boot from and use it. Dalo Harkin Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Ok you need to use winzip to 'unpack' the file to a set location - say a *new folder* on the desktop. and then you need to burn the files in the *new folder* onto a cd *you could use another location* Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
