Running Terminal Server Farm on Virtual Server

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone could point me to information or give their

thoughts regarding "virtualizing" a Terminal Server 2003 farm onto a x64

Windows Virtual Server 2005R2 box.

Currently we have (7) 32-bit TS2k3 servers in WLB cluster with about 300

terminals. The servers are on separate physical boxes. I'd like to

consolidate those onto 1 or 2 64bit VS05R2 machines with lots of memory.

Well, here are a few thoughts on your proposition (by no means

complete):

What do you gain by moving 7 physical servers to 7 (I suppose) virtual

servers? You still have to manage and patch all those (virtual)

servers.

Another line of thought: You need at least 2 physical host servers for

redundancy. Think of what happens if one (physical) server has a

hardware problem: all users will be connecting to the remaining

servers. If you have 7 machines that is no problem: each machine has

an additional load of 16.7%. But if you have only two physical

servers, if one of them fails the other machine has to sustain 100%

more load!

I think you are better off leaving the current setup unchanged. If you

do not agree please post your motivation to migrate to Virtual Server.

I hope this helps.
