I am running an

HP Pavilion a1606n

Windows XP Media center addition version 2002 service pack 2

Pentium ® D 2.66 GHz

2.67 GHz, 0.99 GB of RAM

My problem is that my system is running hard all the time and I have tried the "free spyware scans" and the "free registry fix scans" but nothing seems to work....I am at wits end.

Do I need to have a repair specialist work on it?

Hi

Welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help.

Lets see what is running on your computer.

Please download the latest version of HijackThis from Trend Micro and click on Download Hijack This Installer and save it to your desktop.

  • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install HijackThis.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in Notepad. Include this log in your next reply.

Notes:

Do not use the AnalyseThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.

Do not have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless, or required for your computer to run like it should.

Ditto on what Advanced Setup stated.

To elaborate further, you have so many programs that are automatically starting up when your computer starts, that I'm surprised it's even running.

We see that you are using P2P. Since we do not support these programs and they are often the source of problems we can only offer limited assistance.

P2P or Peer To Peer programs are programs typically used to download music, movies or other types of files.

We can provide you with the steps to remove the P2P.

We can provide steps to remove malware.

If the malware is not removed or returns then P2P needs to be uninstalled for us to provide furthur assistance.

Furthur attempts would be fruitless unless this is ruled out.

The choice is yours but we can not offer assistance on the use of P2P programs.

Your computer is infected with Malware. Please read and follow the instructions below.

  • Malware is software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's informed consent.
It is a combination of the words malicious and software.
The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code.

  • Required Cleanup Steps
    1. Disable the Spybot Search & Destroy TEA TIMER if you use it and if it is enabled
    2. Run a Temporary file and cache cleaner (ATF)
    3. Run 2 Anti-Malware scanners (Listed Below)
    4. Run an Online Anti-Virus / Anti-Malware Scanner (Listed Below)
    5. Clear out old System Restore points
    6. If continued Malware type activity is present you may be asked to post a TrendMicro™ HijackThis™ Log file, do not do so unless requested.

The reason to run multiple scanners is to ensure that no single scanner is missing something.

The time it takes will vary depending on your system and your internet connection speed.

Typically the SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes scanners will take between 10 to 90 minutes.

The ESET online scan should take between 1 to 3 hours.

In most cases, these scans will suffice to clean and disinfect your computer.

Heavily infected systems or slower PCs can take much longer to scan and clean.

For best results print the following instructions and bookmark this Web page

To keep this guide printer-friendly, use your cursor to highlight the contents below.

From your browser select File - Print and in the printer dialog box under "Print range"

click the
Selection
choice to print out these instructions for removal of malware.

      must
use Internet Explorer for this online scan. FireFox, Opera, etc will not work for this scan.

    • If your computer is running Window's Vista, then you
      must first
start Internet Explorer as an Administrator. To do so, right-click on the
      Internet Explorer
icon in the Start Menu and select "
      Run as administrator
" from the popup context menu.

    • Accept the terms and click "Start".

    • Once the scanner is ready, check "Remove found threats" AND "Scan unwanted applications".

    • Click "Start" to begin the scan.

    • When completed restart your computer

Well you still have a couple items that should not be there running.

Please download and run this program. Once it's done run another new HJT scan and post that log and let us know how the system is running.

CureIt! v4.44

Before you began the Eset scan you would have seen the below picture. You should have checked both boxes.

The CureIt! v4.44 program is very small and will detect and clean most stubborn items that can be preventing other tools from working. As with most tools it can not detect and remove everything, but is a great tool to use especially when other tools are having problems cleaning up. It is self contained and very fast overall. Please download and run it, then post a new HJT log.

No you can not change it, nor should you. That mechanism is there to protect you on purpose.

Right click and on the options of the IE window choose to allow the ActiveX to install.

So what did CureIt 4.44 find on your system?

You also have a LOT of things that load up when your computer starts that has to be slowing it way down.

Please run Malwarebytes and do an update and then a Quick Scan and post back the logs from ESET and Malwarebytes.
