Guest Shadow Doc Posted August 4, 2007 Posted August 4, 2007 How can I use cookies from my current Xp system in a new installation of Xp? Will this work going from Xp Home edition to Xp Pro edition? Thanks.

Terhune Posted August 4, 2007 Posted August 4, 2007 Re: Cookies I'm not sure you can do what you want to do, but here's what I have to offer: Cookies are for the most part considered garbage. For the few that are actually useful (saving personal settings for a site) it's simplest to just set them up again. The existing Cookies folder, and in particular the Index.dat that keeps track of the cookies, can't be deleted or replaced while the user is logged on. Thus, you'd need to take a copy of your Cookies folder (C:\Documents and Settings\[username}\Cookies), set up a user on the new system with *exactly* the same username (let's call it "Gary" for this example), log on as Administrator, replace the Cookies folder in C:\Documents and Settings\Gary, and finally log off and then back on as Gary. That's how I'd do it, but I can't promise that it will work. Let us know, OK? -- Gary S. Guest Andrew Murray Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Re: Cookies I'm not sure in what context you're asking the question, or whether you're using the term "cookies" in some other way than what is generally thought of: cookies are small files that web sites write to your hard drive e.g. to let the computer "remember" the last time you were at a particular site, or to retain your login name or whatever, they are also used for tracking your internet browsing habits....They can be deleted without harm to the computer system I think you mis-interpret the purpose of "cookies" or thinking of something else when you're talking about upgrading XP Home to Pro. The upgrade shouldn't be a problem since it is like to like operating systems. Pro has a few extras that HOme doesn't have so the upgrade should procede smoothly. Generally an over the top upgrade of operating system will leave system settings intact, but you can run the "File and Settings Transfer Wizard" to keep such things as email messages and the like.....save them to disk and restore them when the upgrade is done...this includes things like your internet browser "Favourites". But cookies, I wouldn't worry about. Just curious as to why the concern, and are they that essential for you? Guest Shadow Doc Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Re: Cookies The Xp Pro installation is a fresh installation on a new hard drive so it is a new install not an upgrade. 'Cookies' is meant in the usual way. Log-in information and other sometimes useful info is stored there so it would be convenient not to have to recreate them. Guest ju.c Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Re: Cookies Too simple. Copy the cookie files you want to save from your "C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Cookies\" folder to your new folder. (Saved to disk of course) That's it! I've done it. It works. Too simple. -- Help me help others, ju.c. "Shadow Doc" wrote: > The Xp Pro installation is a fresh installation on a new hard drive so it is > a new install not an upgrade.
