MVPs Please!

MVPs, please go back up in the messages and help me with "Unable to

Access Workgroup Computers." Gary, Kelly, Robear, and Ron have skipped

over it, and I would think that one of you might be able to help.

If there is something wrong with the way I asked the question or with

the newsgroup where it was asked, please let me know. I'll do what I can

to get it right.

Thanks!

It's been less than 5 hours since you posted.

Please be patient.

This is a peer-to-peer newsgroup.

There should be *no* expectations and a lot of patience.

I struggle with my own minor networking issues--sorry. I see Sheenan and DB

have replied so good luck with their recommendations. Since you are not

using the web face interface (DB's link), consider posting to:

microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web

By the way, as you may have noticed, it tends to irritate people when

posters ask for help from MVPs or some other specific group. Lots of

knowledgeable folks post here and do not have any titles in their signature

blocks.

I agree. MVPs are nothing special. They are people just like the OP who

decided they might be able to help others with what knowledge they have and

in doing so - were nominated for and accepted a 'title' from Microsoft for

sharing what they know with others freely. By far - MVPs are not the only

ones with the knowledge necessary to resolve issues in these newsgroups - in

fact - they may not have actually experienced whatever issue someone might

be having and could very well be the worst choice for help.

In short - there is no reason to limit WHOM you ask for help.

Well said. Anyone who asks for help from MVPs only is shooting himself

in the foot. Besides everything Shenan says above, note that the day

before each MVP became an MVP, he didn't have substantially less

knowledge.

Many MVPs are good sources of information here. Many people who are

not MVPs are also good sources of information.

You are working against yourself when you post this type of heading. MVP's were and are as anybody else in these newsgroups. Some people know about Networking and some do not. There is people that can help you and know the answer to your issue and they might not be an MVP but an poster such as yourself.

Next you should always post this to the appropriate newsgroup that deals with the issue that you are posting. I this case it would be the networking newsgroup. I suggest that you post it over to that group and wait for an answer. It can take up to 24-48 hrs before someone will post an answer to you. Some people also respect their weekend and their families so do not except an immediate answer as you did now.

I never said, "MVPs only can answer these questions". I don't know where

you got it. You must have read it quickly.

Telling me to search for the answer is not helpful, either. I did a lot

of searching before I posted here.

You're wasting bandwidth and causing me to do the same.

Ken, you too have been a BIG help to me over the years. The post did not

say MVPs only...it said MVPs. I saw you guys skipping over it. Knowing

how fast posts fade into the ether, I was hoping to get draw attention

to the post.

I'm probably just going to rebuild the machine. I already have a couple

of hours tied up in it, and the problem is apparently not as common as I

thought it would be.

Ron, you've been helping me for years, all the way back to the Windows

95 days, and you have always been professional and courteous. Thanks.

Yeah, it seems strange how sensitive people are over the MVP thing. If

the designation is so inflammatory, why do you guys keep using it? As I

recall, Microsoft decided to do away with the program one time, and

there was a major outcry.

I'll post to the other newsgroup, but then some self-appointed usenet

cop will jump on me for posting in multiple newsgroups.

Why have you not answered the questions posed in the original thread you

started instead of replying here?

You wanted attention (after only 5 hours) to a post and now *you* neglect

I've taken the thread to microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web, as I

was chastised to do, but here are the answers to your questions:

> What is recorded in the Event Log?

Absolutely nothing of any help. No errors, no nothing.

> Do you have Norton Internet Security installed (or any third-party

> firewall?)

No

> If you ping the "server" by name --> what do you get back?

Path not found.

> If you tracert the "server" by name --> what do you get back?

Server cannot be found.

> If you ipconfig /all on each of the machines (in an opened command

> prompt) --> other than the IP addresses, what is different? All using

> the same DNS? All in the same subnet?

Some machines are DHCP, some are static. I have not been to each machine

to do an ipconfig /all. The problem is only happening with one machine.

The only difference is that the one XP machine cannot connect to the

share drives or folders on other machines using UNC. All machines are

using the same DNS, and all machines are in the same subnet.

> Verified all the computers are in the same workgroup? (although that

> matters very little most of the time - it could make a difference

> depending on how you map things...)

Yes, verified twice.

> Are all the computers Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP

> Professional or what?

Server is XP Pro. Problem machine is XP Pro. Server is accessible from

other XP Pro and Win2K machines with no problem.

> What specifically is the one computer that is acting up?

XP Pro. All computers are completely patched, no viruses, no spyware.

> Have you opened a command prompt and entered: netsh winsock reset

> <Enter> and rebooted to see if that helps (on the troubled machine.)

Yes, multiple times. I have also tried LSPFix.exe. It did not report a

problem with the winsock. I also removed and reinstalled Client for

Microsoft Windows, File and printer sharing, and TCP/IP.

> Tried: Start button --> RUN --> netsh diag gui --> OK

> and running the tests there?

I tried netsh, netdiag, msinfo32, and several other utilities, but I

cannot see the problem.

> Matter of fact - have you been through this article?

Yes, I went through that article in detail before I made my first post.

> Is simple file sharing turned on?

No, it is not.

Exactly! And on top of that sometimes it can take that long for messages

to appear. This group (as the other MS usenet groups) is also "hosted" on

other Usenet servers throughout the world, and on occasion there can be some

very lengthy replication delays.

Glad to hear it, and thanks for the kind words.

OK, but my point, and I think Shenan's too, is that your subject line

is likely to turn off others who might have been able to help.

I don't recall the question at this point, but if I skipped over it, I

probably didn't have an answer for you. None of us knows everything.

In case anyone is still reading, the problem turned out to be an IP

address conflict. I cannot explain why it was happening. Several

machines on the network are DHCP. It makes no sense to me why the ZyXEL

router would hand out the same IP address to more than one computer, but

that's okay. The machine has now been set to static, and it's cooking.

Sorry for all the newsgroup noise.
