MSCONFIG/Services?

Recommended Posts

I have a services running in MSConfig/Services that I want to stop.

But after unchecking the box for the service, and restarting the

system, it still says "running". What do I need to do to stop this

service?

Thanks for any advice.

Re: MSCONFIG/Services?

You may be able to eliminate some unnecessary services

Services Startup Type Descriptions:

Disabled - This service will never start.

Manual - May be started when needed by an application or another service.

Automatic - Started when Windows boots.

Important: For more info on what services are needed or which can be stopped

see:

http://www.beemerworld.com/tips/servicesxp.htm

Also some services are dependent on others, that is to say a specific

service can not start unless another service is already running.

This will shown as Dependencies.

To stop a service:

Click: start | run and enter: services.msc

Scroll down to the service of interest.

Right click and select properties

Click on the 'General' tab

Set the 'Startup Type' to 'Disabled' if you do not want the service to

start.

1. What is the name of the mystery service?

2. Don't stop services in msconfig; use services.msc instead.

CharlieC,

MSCONFIG, in my opinion, is the last thing to use. It was bad in

Windows ME, it is little better in XP, and almost worse in Vista.

There are many bad, good, very good, and excellent alternatives to

MSCONFIG which are more user-friendly.

I personally use The Ultimate Troubleshooter from AnswersThatWork.com

which is in the excellent category for me. One you've used it once

you won't be able to do without it - as simple as that. Go to their

website and click on the boxshot in the left corner.

Re: MSCONFIG/Services?

Thanks JS,

I followed your instructions and using services.msc, I tried to set a

program to Manual (Webroot Spy Sweeper Engine). I get the message

"Access Denied" - not sure why and what I need to do to gain access?

Thanks for any insights you can provide.

Re: MSCONFIG/Services?

Karl,

As I said, I'm getting constant hourglass activity and screen

flickering every minute or so and need to determine what program is

causing this. Will the Ultimate Troubleshooter help me isolate this

program? I've tried Process Explorer, but am have problems trying to

determine which program and whether I can safely disable it.

Thanks

In this article, in My Computer, you need to click Tools/File

Options/View Tab - under Advance Settings, clear the Use simple file

sharing option - but that option is not listed? - So I could not go

any further.

Following this article's instructions, it indicated to right click on

the folder and click Properties - the click the Security Tab - but

there is no Security Tab? So could not go any further.

Re: MSCONFIG/Services?

Ok, JS,

I looked at the site for "How to see the Securith Tab in XP Home", and

was concerned about the warning they have it in, see below:

WARNING: Adjusting the permissions on a drive, file or folder can

lock even the Administrator account out of that drive/file/folder.

Deny Permissions take precedence over Allow Permissions, regardless of

your group membership. Administrators are members of the User's

group, by default. Uncheck Allow, rather than using Deny.

after reading through it, was wondering about the

Is there a danger in using this? Have you used it and if so, how did

it work?

Thanks

can tell you that there is a risk.

I need some time to test or find additional info.

Re: MSCONFIG/Services?

Thanks,

But I still have the problem with every minute or so - some service is

activated that causes my screen to flicker - it's a very annoying

problem. I've used Process Explorer and Services.msc attempting

locate the cause, but can't seem to isolate it yet. It's never done

this before, so I'm not sure what is causing it.

Re: MSCONFIG/Services?

Near the top of Process Explorer you should see a real time graph of your

CPU usage, if you move the mouse pointer over to and on top of any point or

spike in the graph you should see a small window pop up showing exactly was

cause the CPU load at that point in time.

You can change the CPU sample rate by selecting View/Update Speed.

Also View/Select Columns/Process Performance tab provides additional

options.

Re: MSCONFIG/Services?

Ok, JS,

I will take a look at that and get back to you with the results - Is

there anyway in Process Explorer to create a log of activity? I

looked through everything and did not locate anything?

Thanks again for your help.

Re: MSCONFIG/Services?

No logging ability that I'm aware of, only has a snapshot (save as) option.

What you might want to look at is Process Monitor which does have logging.

Word of warning, it generates a lot of data entries so you might want to

experiment with the filter options to eliminate a lot of redundant and non

applicable data. It will take a little trial and error until you can make

effective use of this utility. Will it be of any help, I can't tell you but

it just might.
