Guest Mario Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 In last few months my laptop sometimes become strangles with some process without any particular reason but I can't figure out which because it is uninusable so much that I can't even ctr+alt+del. I think that some malicious thing will always slow down the laptop. The other thing is that on my 3 machines the startup and shutdown time can be "too long". I know that it is relative thing but with the fresh installation of everything (always the same applications on all machines: XP, avast, winamp, bsplayer, autocad, 3dstudio, office) everything works well for a few months. After that everything slows down despite the defragmentation and all other preventing thing.
Guest Gerry Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Re: My CPU is sometimes strangles with some process Mario What are your anti-spyware arrangements? After any fresh install or other significant install you need to clean up. Try running Disk CleanUp in all user profiles. Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp, More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter. Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak? How large is your hard disk and how much free space. Right click on your C drive in Windows and select Properties to get this information. What is your CPU processor speed? How much RAM memory? Right click on your My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties to get this information. -- Hope this helps. I will remove some things from my D: so than I see. Thanks, I was scared that is some trojan but obviously, according to your questions and advises it can't be.
Guest Gerry Posted August 5, 2007 Posted August 5, 2007 Re: My CPU is sometimes strangles with some process Mario My first question was "What are your anti-spyware arrangements?". When the name Avast is mentioned I think of Anti-Virus not Anti-Spyware! Some Anti-Virus Vendors now offer composite packages but do you have a composite package or the anti-virus package? Given that you cannot access Task Manager you would wise to run anti-spyware software. Please see advice here: http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware -- Hope this helps. Avast is an anti-virus program, not anti-spyware. If you don't run any anti-spyware programs (and you should normally run at least two), I would almost be willing to bet that your performance problems are caused by spyware. I recommend that you go to http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware and follow the instructions there. -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP Windows - Shell/User Please Reply to the Newsgroup

Wow. If it's that bad, task manager might not even help you. Well, if you have to guess, I do have a hunch. That $#&@%!!!! Indexing Service can slow you to a crawl, and then if left untreated (gheheh), it can literally take you to the point where your system becomes unusable. I've seen this at least four times myself. (Say, do you happen to have even one 1.2 GB file on a FAT drive? Not necessary, but I -think- that raises the odds considerably that this will help.) Start -> Search -> For files or folders -> Change preferences -> With Indexing Service (for faster local searches) -> Is Yes, enable Indexing Service selected? If so, click No, do not enable Indexing Service. [image: http://www.dashlaw.com/emoticons/crossedfingers.gif] Men are like campsites. Women should leave them better than they found them. - My wife
