xp startup

Hope you can help with this problem,when i start my pc i get a a thick white line starting from the bottom left hand corner of the screen and going across to the right, as it gets half way across it changes into what looks like a barcode but without the numbers,pc then goes to log on page,i log on and my security tries to kick in (running pc guard from virgin broadband)then everything freezes,mouse will not work, i have to physically turn pc off and then start again,it usually takes three attempts to get pc up and running,therefore i cannot log off/turn pc off as i know i will get this problem again when i attempt to start pc.Thank you in advance. maddog27

The problem you stated is strange. However, I think that the computer might be having problems loading the Agp440.sys service. Try the steps provided in the following Knowledge Base article and see if it helps or not.

As soon as you turn on the computer, keep tapping F8.

 

This will bring you to a start up menu options. Use the cursor keys and choose "Safe Mode with Networking", then press enter.

 

Does the problem exist now?
