Guest Jon Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 I have just finished installing Windows Server 2003 Enterprise R2 on a DL580. I had no problems getting to the internet with the native IE6 installed. I installed SP2 and could no longer get to the internet. I uninstalled the SP and was again able to get to the internet. I installed all of the security updates except for the SP and everything was fine. I installed IE7 and could still get to the internet. I again installed SP2 and cannot get to the internet anymore. I know someone must have experienced this but I cannot find anything on it out on the interent. Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks - Jon

Guest Jon Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 Re: Server 2003 Enterprise R2 and SP2 Blocking IE Hi Linda, Thanks for the note but we are not using any Routing and Remote Access servers. Certainly not for any kind of internet access. I simply installed the OS on my server and when I installed SP2 - boom - internets dead. I think it's something to do with either the settings in IE or the increased security settings that SP2 installs. Trouble is, I don't see anything that looks like that would be the answer to the problem. I've checked the firewall, IE settings, and a number of tech sites as well as microsfts site to see if anyone has a solution but so far I don't see one. Thanks again, Jon "Linda" <Linda@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:292474AD-9917-41F3-9E6D-D0921CA693E9@microsoft.com... > You must check the configuration in Routing annd Remote Access server (if > you > use one) and check if it is active/runs? and the other parameters is > correct > / same as before sp2 > -- > > > "Jon" wrote: > >> I have just finished installing Windows Server 2003 Enterprise R2 on a >> DL580. Would it work, if you enter the IP address of an webserver, instead of its name? Can you ping a well known website by name? (ping http://www.microsoft.com) If not, is the name resolution working at all? Run nslookup from the cmdline and check, which DNS server is in charge for the name resolution and if it can resolve internal and external names properly. If the server itself is the DNS server, which forwarders does it use? Are there any errors in the event log? Is ping working for the IP address? If ping fails, where it stops if you try pathping or tracert? Is there any software or hardware firewall involved, which may block DNS traffic? Is the server multihomed, meaning it has multiple network cards? If yes, what is the order of bindings (in Network Properties / Advanced / Advanced Settings or similar)? Best greetings from Germany Olaf
Guest Jon Posted August 8, 2007 Posted August 8, 2007 Re: Server 2003 Enterprise R2 and SP2 Blocking IE Hello Olaf, I have done some nslookups with that server. Here's what I found: I cannot resolve names internally to my network. I can resolve them with their IP addresses. I can resolve the names of external web sites. I can also resolve them using their IP addresses. I cannot, however, pull up any pages in Internet Explorer. I get 'Internet Expolrer cannot display the webpage' I cannot join the system to my domain. It comes back and tells me 'the network path cannot be found' I know this has to be a DNS issue. So, what did the installation of SP2 do with my name resolution. IP resolution works but internal name doesn't? If I uninstall it everything would run fine. However, I'd rather leave it installed on the system as well as be able to resolve the issue when it comes up again on the next server I install SP2 on. And the next, and the next etc... Thank you very much for looking into this with me and for any assisance you can provide. I really do appreciate it. Guest Jon Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 Re: Server 2003 Enterprise R2 and SP2 Blocking IE Both of the correct DNS IP's are listed in the ipconfig /all for the DNS servers. I put in a static IP address myslef and input the DNS and WINS servers myself so I know they are correct. I simply cannot resolve the names of anything internal to my netowrk using nslookup but the IP address does resolve. I can resolve internet names to their IP's and resolve their IP's to their names. I still don't see the little check box I need to either check or uncheck to get name resolution to work within my network. What did the SP2 do that stopped that from working? What did the SP2 do that stopped that from working? check the security settings on your DNS server for the AD related zones. Does it allow your devices to register in the proper zones? Is the content of the DNS Database correct? Since I'm out for vacation, I will not be able to come back well to this thread within the next days. Best greetings from Danmark Olaf
Guest Jeff Baisch Posted October 5, 2007 Posted October 5, 2007 Server 2003 Enterprise R2 and SP2 Blocking IE Hey Jon, I am having exactly the same issue you are. I am trying to install Windows Server 2K3 Enterprise R2 x64 on a DL580. It works great until you update it to SP2. I don't believe this is related to DNS because I can resolve everything just fine. It has something to do with blocking ports. It appears that after SP2 is installed all ports are blocked execpt for ICMP and Microsoft authentication. Like for port 80 traffic, I can see the request go out but the return packet is being blocked. Were you able to solve this issue? I didn't see any resolution in this thread.
