Every time I plug my external hard drive into my computer, Windows starts breaking and things don't open.

Since about a month or two ago, every time I plug my hard drive(WD Elements 5TB HDD Hard Drive) into the USB port on my computer(Acer Nitro 5 AN515-55), things stop working. I can't turn off my computer from the Start menu or the Acer Power Menu, Settings runs incredibly slowly/doesn't work at all/words stay on the screen from the previous page to the newly selected page, Documents either stops loading or takes a very long time to load, applications like Steam don't open, and everything runs much slower. Before a month ago, the hard drive worked fine for around 10 months from when I bought it,
