How to return to location where you opened a file

When closing a file that I opened in a directory, I want to Return to that same location where I opened a file when I decide to close the file. Microsoft used to do this by default and now I can not keep track of what I am trying to accomplish if I am constantly dumped to another program running on my computer. I need to view 10 files in a directory, so I open the first one. I was going to place an image here but it does not recognize a snip it. or screenshots.The image is of a directory tree and I am in a subdirectory full of pdf files. It can be any type of files, word, excel it does not mat
