Guest JJ Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 I use Norton which seems to work very well in protecting my system except it seems to slow down my processing and web browsing. I just saw an advertisement for AVG anti-virus, ad-ware, spy-ware protection, etc. They claim superior protection without system or browsing interference. Anyone try it yet? Comments? Thanks -- jj

Comments? *Many* people have been using AVG anti-virus for many years (its antispyware is much newer). It's highly regarded by many people whose opinion I respect. I've tried it, but have very little experience with it recently. My personal preference is Avast!, which is also freeware. Either is far better than Norton. -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP Windows - Shell/User Please Reply to the Newsgroup
Guest JS Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 Re: Anti-Virus Software Turn off Automatic Updates (Control Panel/Symantec LiveUpdate/Automatic LiveUpdate tab/Uncheck 'Use Automatic LiveUpdate') I've found Automatic LiveUpdate slows down PC speed at random times even though the Update Frequency default is every 240 minutes. Once I did the above all was well and I now manually download updates daily. Guest AMD_GAMER Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 Re: Anti-Virus Software I have AVG installed on four XP Pro machines and one Server 2003 computer. I used to use Norton, but AVG is FREE....except for the Server edition on 2003. I have a computer business, and install it on all the computers I work on. Guest Newbie Coder Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 Re: Anti-Virus Software JJ, I am not a fan of AVG because version 7 has a BHO & have always trusted Norton products. No idea with AVAST like what the MVP talked about. IMHO - you get what you pay for On the Symantec site (http://www.symantec.com) you can view their K Base articles which tell you how to change the lower performance issue you have. Failing that, Symantec Live Help will also be a good idea if you're using Home Products Also, another user (JS) in this thread said that he removed Live Update... and you can change the frequency yourself easily -- Newbie Coder (It's just a name) "AMD_GAMER" <amdgamer18@gmail.com> wrote in message news:1186432871.230841.217070@o61g2000hsh.googlegroups.com... > I have AVG installed on four XP Pro machines and one Server 2003 > computer. Guest Newbie Coder Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 Re: Anti-Virus Software Gary, Who cares about your opinion anyway? No-one, that's who. Its your opinion only When is a Shell MVP qualified to talk about antivirus products anyway? What do you use instead? By the way: I don't use Norton Home Products, but Symantec Corporate Client 3.1.6.6010 Enterprise which is so much better than the home products. It's highly recommended if you have the money & it comes with a proper server install, force installation, firewall administrator which can push to any number of clients... One user (AMD GAMER) said in this thread that his system scans in less than 20 mins, but that would depend if he/she is scanning all or certain files, how many files on the system too. I am sure he couldn't scan my development machine with around 700, 000 files installed in less than 20 mins. I have proved that some viruses Sophos, McCrappy, AVG... failed to pick up but Norton on mouse over the infected files did. I also remember Hotmail using McCrappy which was letting viruses through whereas Norton detected this threat 10 months before So, maybe some users have bad opinions about Norton, but you will find as many having the same doubts about the others too -- Newbie Coder (It's just a name) "Gary S. Guest Gary S. Terhune Posted August 6, 2007 Posted August 6, 2007 Re: Anti-Virus Software Exactly. You give a hearty recommendation to Norton based upon the corporate edition which has no relationship to the consumer version -- and don't bother to mention that delineation in a group that is primarily accessed by the consumer market. Guest Newbie Coder Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 Re: Anti-Virus Software Caver1, I answered a question in this group a few days ago & from the version number supplied by the OP it shows it was the corporate edition Its like I said you get what you pay for. Guest Newbie Coder Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 Re: Anti-Virus Software Gary, I have setup many PC's etc with all different versions of antivirus and I have found Norton Firewall/Antivirus to be great. Yes you have to pay a subscription, but there is a simple way around that if you know what you are doing. I am not talking about hacking or anything illegal. Sure some have had AVG... & I have also cleaned 100's of viruses off of many machines running the FREE AVG. Would I recommend a product that missed all those viruses, trojans..? No way!!! Many people have said for years that Norton slows the machine down. Its not only due to its auto protect either, but on the Symantec K Base you will see the resolution, but many won't go searching there they will come to a place like here where they hear MVPs saying using AVAST/AVG instead which for me is also off-topic when the OP asks about Norton & system performance If the OP would have posted the exact product he/she are using then the help would have been quicker to arrive ----------- Its all down to opinion. You say you like AVAST, some like AVG which I don't rate at all, no-one likes McCrappy (rightly so). I don't like Kapersky either, but others may love What I see a lot of in this newsgroup is one person likes something, another reads so when a similar post comes up the person who reads the previous post then gives an opinion which they have read & no experience of whatsoever & its passed on. So, before you know it things like AVG have a good name & Norton have a bad one. Its like a chain letter scenerio If you don't like my posts then you don't have to read them. Not seen one of yours helpful to an OP yet. Sorry, but its true -- Newbie Coder (It's just a name) "Gary S. Terhune" <none> wrote in message news:%235jNcKI2HHA.4004@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... > Exactly. Guest Gary S. Terhune Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 Re: Anti-Virus Software The "Trash Windows" side effects of Norton are well known. Note the number of people here that resolve their issues by getting rid of Norton AV. WAIT! What was it the OP said? "I use Norton which seems to work very well in protecting my system except it seems to slow down my processing and web browsing." And that's the least of the problems that Norton causes. I see the same thing in private practice, also. First thing I do is get rid of Norton and suddenly things a are a LOT better. McAfee is only slightly better in this regard. IIRC, TrendMicro doesn't do so well, either. (I don't even like their corporate version, but that's a different story.) Whereas I don't think I've EVER heard of the other popular offerings recommended here causing anything other than very minor problems for the system. Considering that they all (including Norton) do approximately as well, though in different aspects (no one suite covers all the bases well all the time), that earns a big thumbs down for Norton. Hey, if Symantec knows how to "fix" the multitude of problems Norton generates, how come they don't build that fix into the app? You got a link for that KB item (or items)? I'll save it and point users who refuse to dump Norton to it. Lotta good it will do. -- Gary S. I used, and recommended, Norton Antivirus and then Norton Internet Security, for many years, on Win98, WinNT, Win2K, and WinXP, all without any significant problems. I had used McAfee prior to that. But it's been several years since I've been tempted to try McAfee products. Their quality seemed to take a steep nose-dive after they were acquired by Network Associates. However, when my subscription to Symantec's updates for Norton Internet Security 2002 came up for renewal (at a cost substantially higher than the preceding year's subscription), I decided to try less expensive solutions. I downloaded and installed the free version of GriSoft's AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php ) and the free version of Sygate's Personal Firewall (http://smb.sygate.com/free/default.php ). Both have proven to be easily installed, easy to use, and quite effective. Additionally, I was pleasantly surprised to see a small but very noticeable improvement in my PC's performance, once I'd replaced the Symantec product. Of course, since then, Symantec has purchased Sygate and ended the distribution of the free firewall. Fortunately, there's still ZoneAlarm, Tiny, Kerio, et al. When you do decide to remove Norton, be advised in advance that Norton is the barnacle of the software world. You'll probably need the sooper-sekret Norton removal tool available from the Symantec web site. After which, it is prudent to search the registry for any residual mentions of "Norton" "Symantec" and associated detritus.

The corporate versions, not the 3.x versions, but the 10.x versions are still reliable and very efficient and good at detecting about everything. Symantec lowered their min purchase qty down to 5 units, making Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition for Workstations and Servers a viable cost for many home users also. -- Leythos - Igitur qui desiderat pacem, praeparet bellum. - Calling an illegal alien an "undocumented worker" is like calling a drug dealer an "unlicensed pharmacist" spam999free@rrohio.com (remove 999 for proper email address)
