remotely connected to the small network with the other pc (A). Pc (A) is

the main pc were all the programs (such as acounting) and docs are

installed/kept. Because of the frequently message saying that virtually

memory is low, my hard disk was reformatted. However, after all these I still

get a message saying the at the Virtually memory is low. Can someone explain

there is some fyi at the above link.

sometime using the custom size option

might be better for some configuration

whereas the

initial size/min = 2 and

max = (2.5 times the size of your physical ram)

The message means that the pagefile is too small. Reformatting will not fix

such a problem.

Consult Help & Support for instructions on controlling te size of the

pagefile. Select "system managed".

Do you have XP configured to let Windows manage virtual memory?

If not, set it that way.

Do you have at least 2 GB of free space on your hard disk for the pagefile?

The pagefile will be 1.5 times the RAM that is in the PC.

Re: Why vthe message that the virtually memory is low " keeps appe

Apart from making more Virtual Memory available the other issue to be

resolved is why is the demand for memory so much more than the system

been set up fto provide?

Is the machine left on 24/7?

What programmes are you using when the message appears?

Are you using Adobe Acrobat Reader? If yes, which precise version?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance

Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

How large is your hard disk and how much free space. Right click on

your C drive in Windows and select Properties to get this information.

What is your CPU processor speed? How much RAM memory? Right click on

your My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties to get

this information.

Letting the system manage the size of the pagefile means that, as more space

is needed, the OS adds it. XP never reduces the size

of the pagefile.

Re: Why vthe message that the virtually memory is low " keeps appe

No, the machine is on about 8 hours a day. No specific programmes are been

used when the message appears. Is it because there are many programes been

"open' such as accounting programes, ms outlook, excel file etc? All these

programes are installed in pc A through which pc B access

Adobe Acrobat Reader v.7.0 indatlled in the pc

As for the Commit Charge - dont have the details now but how do we make use

of this information or what must we do to have that reduce/increase etc?

CPU processor is Pentium 4 2.8ghz, 512 mb of ram, hdd size 80gb with 86%

free space (very sorry OP tech spec is for pc A), windowsupdated. Thanks

Re: Why vthe message that the virtually memory is low " keeps appe

Having a lot of programmes open could be the problem. Can you provide a

list of those usually open?

My question about Commit Charge is directed towards comparing memory

demand to RAM to be able see what level of pagefile usage is being

generated. You could more directly measure usage with pagefilemon. It

could also help toward assessing to what extent the machine might

benefit from extra RAM.

You may find it helpful to know exactly how much of your pagefile is

being used. Use page file monitor to observe what is the peak usage.

Start it to run immediately after start-up and look at the log at the

end of the session. The log is Pagefile log.txt. If you right click on

the file in Windows Explorer and select Send to, Desktop (Create

Shortcut). The same applies to XP_PageFileMon.exe.

A small utility to monitor pagefile usage:

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_pagefilemon.htm

Note programs using undo features particularly those associated with

graphics and photo editing require large amounts of memory so if you

use this type of programme check these first observing how the page

usage increases when they start and whether the usage decreases when

you close the programme.
