XP SP2 .NET update installs correctly, then XP repeatedly asks toinstall it, over 6 times now...

I recently performed a Windows Update on my XP SP2 and a NET framework

update was installed. Now XP repeatedly wants to install the same

update, telling me the update was successful each time. I performed the

same update 3 times just to make sure I wasn't missing anything, or

watching to see if there were error messages during the installation

that I wasn't seeing, but nothing looked out of the ordinary.

"Microsoft Security Bulletin MS07-040 - Critical" lists one Critical and

one Important Severity rating for this SP2 update, so I imagine it may

be a good idea installing this one:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms07-040.mspx

To get rid of the messages I used the Control Panel > Add/Remove

Programs to uninstall the update. Does anyone have any idea how I can

install this one 'doing it right the first time', not seeing repeated

requests to install it?

TIA,

Mike

IF the update in question is KB928366, the read on:

Suggest you use the steps on this page to remove .NET Framework 1.1 IF

it will not uninstall from Add/Remove Programs :

http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/12/10/502439.aspx

[*IF* it does uninstall from Add/Remove Programs, then use the steps

outlined HERE: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100/ ]

Then download a fresh copy of it from the link on the above page and

SAVE it.

Download .NET Framework SP1 from the above page and SAVE it.

Then download the update from here and SAVE it:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=281FB2CD-C715-4F05-A01F-0455D2D9EBFB&displaylang=en

After the downloads have been completed close the browser and any other

open programs.

DISCONNECT the system from the internet if it's on broadband.

*** Completely disable the installed antivirus software either by

reading the product's Help file or by consulting it's web site. ***

Install .NET Framework 1.1

Restart the system if requested to

Install .NET Framework SP1

Restart the system if requested to

Now install KB928366 [ NDP1.1sp1-KB928366-X86.exe ]

Restart the system if requested to

REENABLE the installed antivirus software and then reconnect the system

to the internet.
