Guest John Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 Hi Folks, I saw quite a few peeps saying that the MS Defrag seems to have little or no effect on the speeding up of machines anymore. It seems like Microsloth has "sabotaged" its own defrag programme. Now even though the display screen "looks neater", this may well be a "White Lie" or even a "Black Lie". Other defrag programmes show such a Microsloth Drefragged disk as being Heavily Fragmented ! Why should this happen ? Possibly so that you will be encouraged to "upgrade" to Windoze Vista, when (Lo and Behold) the MS Defrag is suddenly working again !!! I believe that this "flaw" happened with a recent Windoze "Update", which co-incided with the Launch of Vista. Hmmm, very suspicious. Try such a GPL program as "JK Defrag" (there are others) but this one is tried and tested, and uses MS own API when moving files, so as to eliminate the risk of data loss AFAP. http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/ No need to run this as a screen saver, or even every day as the software manufacturer recommends, but it will benefit from being run several ( 5 or 6 ) times, after you first install it. I noticed a marked increase in speed, and a reduction in Boot / Shutdown time. Particularly the infamously slow "Add / Remove Programs" applet appears almost instantly, in mine own case. Usual disclaimer and provisos apply, Caveat Omnes Consentit. Have luck. .......... John

Guest Gerry Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 Re: MS Defrag Program No Good Anymore Main cat I agree the post was garbage. The Disk Defragmenters provided with Windows are not so far as I am aware Microsoft programmes. They are cut down versions of a third party programme. If you want the full version you have to buy it from the third party. The name of the third party does not immediately come to mind. What Microsoft provides suits my needs, save that I do not like the Vista interface. The command mode version in Vista is better. -- Regards. I do give you anecdotal and personal written evidence. It is up to you whether you believe or not, and it is your loss if not. I not only give an example of such a programme but indeed I have provided a link to the Programme Manufacturer where you can read the evidence for yourself. I can assure you that this is neither Spam nor "Typical spam" since I am neither selling this softyware, and nor is the manufacturer, and I am unconnected with them ( excvept as a user of the application). The programme is released under the rules of the GNU Public Licence, and is and will remain Totally FREE forever. It is not "Utter rubbish" at all but a very useful utility which I and many others are grateful that the Author took the time to write. ........... John

Utter rubbish. > > Well Gerry, Firstly please do not "top post" since this makes it difficult for other readers to follow the sequence of a particular thread. You "agree the post was garbage" without even having presumably either read the literature, or having tried it, and simply agreeing with the previous posters unsubstantiated remarks. MS Defragmenter was changed from "Defrag.exe" to the consol version "dfrg.msc" as I have remarked and was changed on 30th May 2007 most recently. Now this controls the two sub applets, one for FAT and the other for NTFS filesystems. Both "dfrgfat.exe" and "dfrgntfs.exe" is made for Microsoft Corp. by Executive Software International, Inc. as long ago as 2001 and the previous Win & MSDOS Defrag was also made by them. Now however that company is known as "Diskeeper Corporation" and thier commercial offering is somewhat more complex, and indeed does more than just defragment disks. I would call it bloatware, and of course it cost between 30 and 100 bucks. The command mode of "JKdefrag" is a million times better than the "cut down version" of the Microsloth bought in stuff that ole Gates wants you to use. eg. For example: JkDefrag.exe -a 7 -d 2 -q c: d: -a N Select an action to perform. The number N is a value from 1 to 11, default is 3: 1 = Analyze only, do not fixup and do not optimize. 2 = Analyze and fixup, do not optimize. 3 = Analyze, fixup, and fast optimization (default). 5 = Analyze and force together. 6 = Analyze and move to end of disk. 7 = Analyze and sort files by name (folder + filename). 8 = Analyze and sort files by size (smallest first). 9 = Analyze and sort files by last access (newest first). 10 = Analyze and sort files by last change (oldest first). 11 = Analyze and sort files by creation time (oldest first). -e "mask" Exclude files and/or directories that match the mask. The items will not be defragged and will not be moved. Use wildcards '*' and '?' in the mask to match a set of files or directories. If the mask contains a space then it must be enclosed in double-quotes. Some examples: JkDefrag -e *.avi -e *.zip -e *.log JkDefrag -e D:\MySQL\Data\* -u "mask" Files that match a mask will be moved to the SpaceHogs area. The program has a build-in list for all files bigger than 50 megabytes, files not accessed in the last month, archives, files in the recycler bin, service pack files, and some others. Disable this list by specifying the special mask "DisableDefaults". Use wildcards '*' and '?' in the mask to match a set of files or directories. If the mask contains a space then it must be enclosed in double-quotes. Some examples: JkDefrag -u *.avi -u *.zip -u *.log JkDefrag -u D:\MySQL\Data\* -s N Slow down to N percent (1...100) of normal speed. Default is 100. -f N Set the size of the free spaces to N percent (0...100) of the size of the volume. The free spaces are room on disk for temporary files. There are 2 free spaces, between the 3 zones (directories, regular files, space hogs). Default is 1% (per free space). -d N Select a debug level, controlling the messages that will be written to the logfile. The number N is a value from 0 to 6, default is 1: 0 = Fatal errors. 1 = Warning messages [default]. 2 = General progress messages. 3 = Detailed progress messages. 4 = Detailed file information. 5 = Detailed gap-filling messages. 6 = Detailed gap-finding messages. -l "filename" Specify a filename for the logfile. Default is "JkDefrag.log" and "JkDefragCmd.log". Specify empty string "" (two double-quotes) to disable the logfile. -h [commandline version only] Show a short help text. -help [commandline version only] Show a short help text. --help [commandline version only] Show a short help text. /? [commandline version only] Show a short help text. -q [windows version only] Quit the program when it has finished. items The items to be defragmented and optimized, such as a file, directory, disk, mountpoint, or volume, including removable media such as floppies, USB disks, memory sticks, and other volumes that behave like a harddisk. Wildcards '*' and '?' are allowed to select a set of files. If the item contains a space then it must be enclosed in double-quotes. The last character in a name should never be a backslash. Some examples: JkDefrag C: D: JkDefrag f:\*.log D:\MySQL\Data\* I would suggest that you actually research what others have written, and actually try software before criticising the hard work of others unjustly. ............ Guest Gerry Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 Re: MS Defrag Program No Good Anymore John If you dress up in the clothes of one of Hate Bill Gates / Microsoft lunatic fringe you should not be surprised if you are taken to be of that ilk. In these Microsoft newsgroups you can bottom post, top post or use any other recognised method of posting. It's not an issue here save with some elements of the Hate Bill Gates lunatic fringe. Given that any changes to Windows XP distributed components etc are very rare now save for Security Updates and Net Framework I am surprised to hear you say that changes were made to the MS Defragmenter on 30 May 2007. On my computer, which is regularly updated, defrag.exe is dated 2004 and dfrg.msc is dated 2001. What evidence do you have to support your allegations that there have been changes? -- Hope this helps. These rules are there for a reason, and although it may well make no difference to you there are thousands of "Lurkers" who will benefit from reading these discourses. They will find it difficult to follow the thread if it is all dis-jointed and posted in seperate messages and top / bottom post etc. Just as when you drive down the road in USA you will drive on the right hand side of the road. In this Public forum you ( and I ) and everyone else should obey the basic rules, or the Public will be unable to reach a proper conclusion, from reading the debate in here. I am not a Policeman in here, and I am not going to be entering into a pointless flame war with you. You must understand that I have given the information not just for your benefit, but for those who might be having a similar problem. All you have done is to seemingly, endlessly carp on about petty points and make gratuitous criticisms which are both unfounded and unhelpful. .......... John

You considered those lines unnecessary, but I did not. I left them in, and you edited them out. But your point is..... what ? I made my remark (as an aside) for readability purposes and then went on to discuss the original subject. Your post didn't even have ANYTHING to say on the Original Subject. I will not respond to further posts in this thread, unless they discuss the Original Topic, in a constructive and informative fashion within the Forum Guidelines..... ............. John

Guest Gerry Posted August 8, 2007 Posted August 8, 2007 Re: MS Defrag Program No Good Anymore Given that any changes to Windows XP distributed components etc are very rare now save for Security Updates and Net Framework I am surprised to hear you say that changes were made to the MS Defragmenter on 30 May 2007. On my computer, which is regularly updated, defrag.exe is dated 2004 and dfrg.msc is dated 2001. What evidence do you have to support your allegations that there have been changes? -- Hope this helps.
