pilotbob Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 I've just bought 2 new identical PC's with XP pro installed. Both Cre 2 Duo with 250GB HD and 2GB mem. Both are running ok but whilst one has accepted SP3 from a CD I burned from the .iso, the other will not install SP3 either from the CD or from windows update site. Neither will it install Update for Windows XP (KB898461) and Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1. I've also tried to install IE7 and again no joy with this one machine. The other is fine. Any ideas? Many thanks, Bob. Quote

pilotbob Posted July 1, 2008 Author Posted July 1, 2008 Let me get this right Bob, you created an ISO image from a copy of XP yes? Negative, I downloaded the distributable .iso for SP3 from windows update site. Admin rights are set on both machines. Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 As Goku said what errors are you getting from windows updates at MS? I can't see why you would have to burn an ISO for SP3 when you can just download it. Quote

No restore point that would be any good I'm afraid, the first thing I did when I got the machines was to try to install SP3, one worked the other didn't. I wasn't too concerned at that stage as SP2 was already installed but now I can't get IE7 as well I'm a bit miffed. Trouble is this machine is the master of a network of 3 and I really don't want to start again from scratch.:( 2 days lost already. Quote

AdvancedSetup Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 Hello Bob Please click on START - RUN and type in EVENTVWR and click OK Then start reading some of the events under APPLICATION and SYSTEM that have a RED indicator on them. See if any apply to the updates you were trying to install and post back a few of those entries here. Without seeing the logs just a guess off the top of my head, this might help to resolve it. Click on START - RUN and type in CMD /K CHKDSK C: /F then press the Y key to allow disk check to run on next reboot. Then restart your computer and go to the next step. Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder. First, stop the Automatic Updates Service Click on START - RUN and type in services.msc Click on OK or hit the ENTER key In the right-hand pane of the Services window, locate and right-click on Automatic Updates and then select Stop Using Explorer or open My Computer, browse to C:\Windows and locate and rename the SoftwareDistribution folder to SoftwareDistributionOLD Go back to the Services window and restart the Automatic Updates - right-click on Automatic Updates and then select Start. Note that a side effect of renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder is that you will lose your current update history listing. . Quote Need help with your computer problems? AdvancedSetup Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 Well it would seem that either some installed application such as Antivirus or similar may be interfering with the install, or some type of invalid entry in the Registry (that will be very difficult to locate and correct remotely) , or some type of Malware has gotten on to the system. Do you have the actual Windows XP CD ? Let's try this routine to rule out any type of Malware or Virus being on the system. I know it's a pain but at this point we need to rule it out. Please follow through and perform these tasks in the exact order given. Your computer could be infected with Malware. Malware is software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's informed consent. It is a combination of the words malicious and software. The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code. Required Cleanup Steps Disable the Spybot Search & Destroy TEA TIMER if you use it and if it is enabled Run a Temporary file and cache cleaner (ATF) Run 2 Anti-Malware scanners (Listed Below) Run an Online Anti-Virus / Anti-Malware Scanner (Listed Below) Clear out old System Restore points If continued Malware type activity is present you may be asked to post a TrendMicro™ HijackThis™ Log file, do not do so unless requested. The reason to run multiple scanners is to ensure that no single scanner is missing something. The time it takes will vary depending on your system and your internet connection speed. Typically the SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes scanners will take between 10 to 90 minutes. The ESET online scan should take between 1 to 3 hours. In most cases, these scans will suffice to clean and disinfect your computer. Heavily infected systems or slower PCs can take much longer to scan and clean. For best results print the following instructions and bookmark this Web page To keep this guide printer-friendly, use your cursor to highlight the contents below. From your browser select File - Print and in the printer dialog box under "Print range" click the Selection choice to print out these instructions for removal of malware.http://kixhelp.com/wr/images-freepchelp/printer-selection.gif__________________________________________________ STEP 1 Disable Spybot Search & Destroys' TEA TIMER: (if installed) Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode" On the left hand side, Click on Tools Then click on the Resident Icon in the List Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts. Restart your computer. __________________________________________________ STEP 2 Follow these instructions carefully. Download ATF-Cleaner from Snapfiles.com to remove un-needed temporary files from your computer that may contain malware. You can also download it from Majorgeeks.com When you run ATF-Cleaner, check the items as shown below for Main. For FireFox, be sure to click on the FireFox tab on top and check the items as shown below for FireFox NOTE: If you don't have FireFox or Opera installed then they will be grayed out and can be ignored Then click on "Empty Selected". http://kixhelp.com/wr/images-freepchelp/atf-cleaner01.gif . http://kixhelp.com/wr/images-freepchelp/atf-cleaner02.gif__________________________________________________ STEP 3 Install and run the free version (not the Professional version) of SUPERAntiSpyware from SUPERAntiSpyware.com Accept any prompts to allow SUPERAntiSpyware to install the latest rules and infection definition files. You do not have to send them your e-mail address, just click next. You can leave the automated check for updates on. You can uncheck "Send a diagnostic report to research center" if you don't want to send the information. DO NOT allow SUPERAntiSpyware to protect your Home Page settings. On the Top Left select the Scan your computer button. Make sure there is a CHECK MARK on all Fixed Drives. Click "Perform a Complete Scan". Click "Next" to Repair issues found and reboot the computer when prompted to do so. __________________________________________________ STEP 4 Install and run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Malwarebytes - (direct download) Accept all defaults for the installer Allow the program to update the definitions Click on the Quick Scan and click Next. If any items are found allow it to clean them and then Reboot your computer. __________________________________________________ STEP 5 Run an online scan with ESET from Free Virus Scan: Use ESET's Online Antivirus Scanner You must use Internet Explorer for this online scan. FireFox, Opera, etc will not work for this scan. If your computer is running Window's Vista, then you must first start Internet Explorer as an Administrator. To do so, right-click on the Internet Explorer icon in the Start Menu and select "Run as administrator" from the popup context menu. Accept the terms and click "Start". Once the scanner is ready, check "Remove found threats" AND "Scan unwanted applications". Click "Start" to begin the scan. pilotbob Posted July 3, 2008 Author Posted July 3, 2008 Advanced Setup, thanks for this detailed reply, sounds like it could be a long job:( However before I got you message I decided to run a sfc /scannow. The process halted at least 6/7 times asking for the original WinXP/SP2 disk. I only have a "Restore System" disk from the supplier which it wont accept. So question, is it possible to copy the required system files from the other working machine? if so where from? Many thanks again, and will continue with the steps you outlineed anyway! Can't do any harm to be sure I've no infections. Bob. Quote
