Guest Wheaton Bob Posted August 7, 2007 Posted August 7, 2007 I'm trying to clean up my hard drive, I down loaded all my files and found that I have 13 (msvcr71.dll) files all the same size 348160. My question is do I require all 13 files from various programs or do I need 1. If only one, which do I keep the newest or oldest or something in between?? I also have other .dll files that are the same such as: msvcp71.dll, pclib32.dll etc. Thank for you help. -- Bob

In theory, it's also okay to delete all other copies located in multiple program directories. However, since many applications are installed by the Windows Installer, deleting copies of these files may wind up with a reinstallation of all program files when starting these applications. Therefore, you might be better off when leaving these files alone. -- d-d

I will rename the files in other directories to msvcp71.dllOLD, try to leave one copy in these directories: C:\Program Files\ C:\Windows\System32 Also you can Copy all these files on a removable Storage and then remove all of them but keep the latest version on the system. Run all your applications/programs and see which one will complain of the missing file and you can copy it back to where it want it. HTH. nass

Complete waste of time and effort, given the little disk space that is saved by deleting.
