Of recent times I have found if I attempt to go to the address bar to copy the address and then paste it

instead of getting the full long address, I am getting a short address. But if I click on the short address, it does go to the proper place.Will it always go to the proper place? IS this something new? IF there is a shorter address that works why not show it in the address bar to begin with instead of some of these addresses that are book long? Can someone explain to me what is going on?
