pwl2706 Posted July 8, 2008 Author Posted July 8, 2008 RE: RandyL (McAfee) Hi Randy, Yes but in the Enterprise version that I have there is nothing like that - just the Port Access control. I checked with the Desktop Team at work (who supply us with the McAfee) and they say my version has no firewall... Anyway, for now I've reset the Winsocks (a guy at work suggested it) and will reboot to see if that helps... I've also tried in the msConfig to remove absolutely everything... Will let you know. Thanks for all your help so far. Philip Quote
RandyL Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Hi again; Has there been any change? Like I said I don't use Enterprise Edition but I do know the full suite contains a firewall. Enterprise Edition. Either way I suspect a firewall to be an issue here. Windows, Mcafee or your Hardware firewall. One or more might be blocking you. Also if you are running more then one they might be conflicting. Try disabling all of them temporarily just to see what happens. Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. pwl2706 Posted July 9, 2008 Author Posted July 9, 2008 RE: FireWall Ok, I have no software firewall (at least I can't find one) and still have no luck with HTTP Port 80 ... Is there any way I can find out what is blocking it before I go the whole hog and reinstall Windows? I prefer to avoid this if possible, as I am replacing the laptop in October anyway, and will have to completely nuke the system plus reinstall before selling it, however, I do need IE/Firefox for some websites such as my bank! Is there a simple way of creating another partition with Linux that I can use FireFox on (or even another instance of Windows running in Safe Mode with Networking)? thanks everyone Philip Quote
RandyL Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Don't get ahead of yourself pwl; Since your scans were clean this has to be a firewall issue. The way to find out what is blocking it is to disable the most likely programs. Disable all aspects of them for now temporarily. You have three likely suspects. Disable all of them for now to help isolate the cause. Do you know how to disable Mcafee from the Security Center? Right click the Mcafee icon in the system tray and click on the Security Center. From there disable everything. Disconnect the router. Connect directly. Go into Control Panel and Security and turn off the Windows firewall. Try it now. If it works then we can go from there. In regards to your last question there is no simple way. It would be more simple to resolve this issue. Quote We are all members helping other members. Dalo Harkin Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Ok - turn off the windows firewall and try to access the net. If you are using McAfee - disable it - your router hardwall will be enough to keep the nasties out. If you do the above and it still doesnt work we need to look at the routers home page and see that its all set up in there. RandyL Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Please do as Dave suggests. Can you please also explain a few other things. Why is your company supplying a corporate or small business edition of Mcafee for your home computer? This Edition was meant for networked or business PC's if I remember right. Since it is a full suite why is the firewall not installed? Is this a laptop and did it work on the job site? Why are you running Safari as that is most unusual on a Windows PC? Is this your personal computer or does it belong to your company? Either way do as Dave suggests. Let us know please as to what happens. Quote We are all members helping other members. It's a policy of my employer to make Anti-Virus software freely available to all it's employees (worldwide) for use on the home computer. They take the view that it will reduce virus problems... I think in their Enterprise version (8.0i) there is no firewall as they have corporate firewalls, proxies etc It is my personal laptop, owned by myself, and I have never taken it to work (BTW, it's worked fine for 2 years, just a problem in the last month). I am only running Safari because (as luck would have it) it works even though IE and FireFox don't work (which is mightily strange). If I had IE or FF working, I would not be using Safari (although it grows on you) Windows FireWall is off. I can't find a McAfee FireWall - but there is 'Port Blocking' which relates to things like mass-mailing emails and worms... Is there any chance that there is yet another firewall installed by something in the last few weeks (like God Help Me, Norton ?) I will reboot this evening and let you know how it goes. Thanks Philip Quote

With my own paid ISP (broadband cable) ... same one I've had for 2 years... ANd as I've said, I have no trouble getting on the net with Safari (or MSN Messenger etc) and have no trouble running Sling Player... just IE and FF That's why it's so weird and frustrating! pwl2706 Posted July 10, 2008 Author Posted July 10, 2008 RE: LSP-Fix - AND - McAfee Disabled Hi, I downloaded and ran LSP-Fix and when I opened it I saw the green message 'No Problems Found'.... I could see three LSP's but did not know which one's I should remove so I left it alone... I rebooted again last night after disabling McAfee and Windows Firewall... Dalo Harkin Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 you need to go into whatever firewall you are using - I am guessing now you are just using the router - go to the routers home page and get onto the main screen, there are some options for port forwarding and blocking - it will tell you whats open and whats not. Hi, in the SA WebStar router setup, there is a FireWall Options area, with Port Forwarding, Port Triggers and so on... But these were specifically for opening and forwarding Ports, there is nothing that I can find that shows Port 80 (or 81) as blocked ... I will check again, add Port 80 as a forwarded port, and reboot the router this evening to see if it has any effect (I doubt it)... thanks Philip Quote

I reinstalled her operating system, and about half way through re-installing all of the software, I got an email from Zone-Alarm about the patch. After I vented my spleen (figuratively, of course) to Microsoft, I further investigated this and ascertained that the Zone Alarm fix involved fixing the security setting to medium, such that the user can no longer raise it to High. I will not bother installing it, I think. My own laptop had already had to have the ZA security setting downgraded, so that my PC could continue accessing the internet through my mobile company's wireless access method, otherwise I would no doubt have really chewed M$'s ears off. donthureau Posted November 19, 2008 Posted November 19, 2008 Please try connecting after starting in Safe Mode with Networking. This loads the minimum amount of resources to get you running. Some things like printing won't work, but let's see if you can get IE or FF working. To get into Safe Mode with Networking.... Reboot your computer and start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again. If F8 doesn't work try F5. * Ensure that the Safe Mode with Networking option is selected. * Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode with Networking. * Log on with an account that has administrator priviledges, usually your own account (NOT the account named Administrator). This was a great reply that worked after weeks of doing all kinds of tweaking and checking at various sites. Going to Safe Mode with Networking showed that HTTP worked again in I.E., and then running MSCONFIG, and tabbing to services, filtering out all Microsoft Services, and unchecking the rest, showed that the culprit appears to have been a problem with AVG Anti-Virus. Thanks! Quote
RAGEofLAW Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 Let's disable any proxy settings. In IE, Tools, Internet Options, Connections, and click the LAN Settings button. Uncheck ALL the boxes on this screen and click OK, then OK to the Internet Settings screen. Restart IE Worked for me!!!:):):) It came from a malicious adware I know the post is old, but thought I would add what should help anyone in the future out Quote
