Hi there.

I have a 2nd hard drive in my PC that has become corrupt. It is not a system drive and is only used as a back up for my photos.

I have tried running CHKDSK in the tools option and also through recovery console but each time i get a message saying 'unable to determin volume type chkdsk aborted'

Can anyone offer any help or advise, i have some photos on there that I really do not want to lose and am at my wits end.

Hello Colonel

Welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help

As a long shot for the moment type chkdsk *: /v

The asterisk would denote the given drive letter, example E

Therefore chkdsk E: /v Make note of the space after the colon and the forward slash.

Get back to us if this can discover the version.

What is the file system as shown in Disk Management Colonel, if seen at all.

If not, can the drive be seen in the bios?

Do you think something like this would be worth a go?

Ultimate Boot CD - Overview

Yes Colonel, that would surely be a good alternative provided you know how to use it. Read the guide that comes with it first so that you may get an idea of it. When you are ready, perform a disk check and post back the results as soon as possible. Good Luck. :)
