I have 2 identical PC's I've just updated the BIOS on both of them, and now they will only connect 2 SSD's,

I have 2 identical PC's I've just updated the BIOS on both of them, and now they will only connect 2 SSD's, If I connect a 3rd drive the computer won't even power up. The thing is if I use exactly the same cables on the drive that didn't work it powers straight up, and trying all new leads makes no difference and it's doing it on both machines. One machine has a brand new 1000w PSU and the other one has a 1200W PSU so I know there's plenty of power there. So I reckon it's the BIOS but what I want to know is Why?
