I'm not one for gaming, but I watched the video and I don't see where the problem is. Where on the video does this problem manifest itself?

Hi Greycell,

It seems like you are having some problems with the RAM on the GPU - do you have the latest patches for COD4 - it is a very GPU intensive game and you really need a more powerfull card to run it on max settings -

try and take all the higher setting off and run it at your standard resolution and see if that helps - if the game works then the chances are the GPU can't handle the shader effects etc, you will find this is more common on 64bit OS's as they render more of the background.

Hey guys thanks for yoru replies,

Kelly : It just starts to flicker randomly, even when nothing really ingame is going on, there is no performance decrease or slowdown, my framerates are still around 60 whilst this happens, there is a perfect picture one moment, then all of a sudden i'll notice theres a small flicker, then in the course of about 15 seconds, the flicker gets worse and wobbles more and more, then all of a sudden the monitor will go completly black, and then the pc just turns off, its really odd. In the video its about 5 seconds after it starts, its hard 2 see at first, but more noticeable the more wobbly and fickery it gets.

Dalo : Thanks for your help buddy, the gfx card has 256mb DDR2, and its a 1Gig card, so I thought it would handle it ok, it appears 2 as there is no actual performance decrease wich is weird, just this happens, the ATI website has a can i run it test thing, that scans your pc etc 2 c if its compat with the game and what you can run it at, and it shows i can run everything on high, and i dont need any kind of upgrade, but my thoughts are its possibily incorrect, when i got the new components, i was told that the pc would run all the latest games etc on highest, for example i can play Crisis under DX10 on highest, for ages and hteres no problems crashes, or slowdowns, wich is weird, as its a more graphics hogging game than COD4...wich makes me wonder about the PSU unit in my pc, is it possible that there is a lack of power getting 2 the card? when i get home i will have 2 check the wattage on the unit, as ATI do recommend a 400watt or more PSU, i'll also try what you have recommended to see if this helps :)

Thanks again for both your inputs

It could be a lack of Power, but you will not have all the settings maxed on Crysis and get decent FPS - the ONLY card that can play CRYSIS smooth at 1680x1050 is the 9800GX2 and that is far beyond any of the Radeons - I have a 2900XT and even that cant do full at 1680x1050 :(

I saw the post you put on youtube and I have only seen things like that when the game is either:-

Not got the newest patches

Overclocked (heat issues on the GPU)

or the DDR4 mem on the GPU has had it.

Forget what the site says 400 is a VERY high amount - like I say my 2900XT doesn't use more than 300 on MAX

Oh yea sorry i have the latest COD4 patches, likewise with my system drivers, Crysis on the other hand i play on 1024x768, no idea why i just prefer it at that res, and on the highest settings etc, im on baout 20-29 fps, not sure if this is something that shouldnt be happening, but thats what i get, wich is why i find it odd with Cod4 ^^, my 1st original thoughts was the PSU, but with you saying it could be the GFX card, im gonna monitor the gfx card now instead of the system temp etc, as the temps on the system are below 50, thanks for the fast input!

Some more indepth stats about the gfx card

Shader Units 120

ROPs 4 x2

GPU RV630

Transistors 390

Memory Size 256mb

Memory Bus 128mb

Core Clock 800Mhz

Memory Clock 1100Mhz

Thanks again :D

What CPU are you running??

- do you have a fan blowing over the GPU - or do you have the massive standard noisy thing they strap on?

I put the Thermaltake HR03 I think it was on mine and boy what a difference - no longer sounds like a Vantec Tornado fan lol

If the temps on the card get too high the picture will distort (like yours) and the BIOS shuts the computer down to prevent damage -

Give the GPU a clean and make sure that the fan is clear of dust - I know its hard with the cooler they put in but worth a try. :)

Can you also please state the Make of the RAM as you state you have 4GB - you may need to up the voltage and the timings - the MCH voltage controls the GPU and the RAM

ok Dalo, thanks :)

Now that im home, i've noticed that im using a 230 PSU, i got 4 Fans atm, one is on the back of the case inside, one ofc on the cpu, one on the like heat thingy, and one on the gfx card, wich i would naturally assume should be enough...the temp on my cpu whilst playing Call of duty 4 goes no higher than 50C, and system temp doesnt go over 56C, Graphics temp goes no higher than 63c, wich doesnt seem to me like its a Tempature issue, however...everytime that i now launch Cod4, im keeping the Temp app's open, so that the next time the game does the weird shutdown stuff i can minimize and check the temps at the time of it screwing up.

Also, my Gfx stats appear 2 be different from the ATI websites specificiation overview, Here are the new specs.

Memory Size 512mb DDR2

GPU Clock 660Mhz

Memory CLock 550Mhz

As for my MB Ram, they are..

4x 1 gig sticks

DDR2

800 DIMM 5-5-5

Thats all the info on the Sticks

PSU Information - http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v505/serebros/P090708_2025.jpg

Note: this is not overclocked or on ATI Overdrive.

Along with this info heres a pic of inside the case, its pretty spacious, nothing really hugging together http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v505/serebros/P090708_1901.jpg

Is that Asus fan on the CPU?

What does that fan cover to the right?

Mmm

What I can't understand is why the heatsink is not on the CPU, and I can't see any cooling pipes, times must be changing.

I'll let Dalo carry on with this.

My CPU temp is fine, that fan works very very well, the heatsink fans there as that was what it was for,:) cooling pipes, never really thought about them when i bought this stuff might be sumthing i may have 2 invenst in Edited by GreyCell1988

So this ONLY happens on Call of duty4 or can you duplicate the issue running any other programs?

Not to send you off somewhere else, but the forum here is dedicated to Call Of Duty 4 so there might be more users and input for this on their forum.

You're more than welcome to continue looking at the issue here on this board, I'm just offering other hopeful solutions to your issue.

Thanks Advanced buddy, i'll also make a post up on there, atm i've only had this work on COD4, i ran Assassins creed and Crysis all on highest, for around an hour each with no problems, but i guess i'll have to run them a little longer to 100% be sure.

230 Watt is shockinglly low for a PSU anyway -

but just done some research and the 2600 pro only uses between 30-60 Watts at Full 3D:eek: (depending which manufacturers card you got)

As Adanced has said if you are just getting this problem on COD4 then this must be specific to that game -

You could try upping the refresh rate on the RAM - if you are using 4GB of RAM then the settings should be 5-5-5-15-42 you can try 5-5-5-15-52 and see if that helps - your RAM may not be refreshing fast enough for COD4 -

*make sure you remember what the original setting was before you change it in the BIOS*

Hey Dalo! thanks for the respone buddy, Yea the power is low, altho i dont even seem to be using it all! wich is weird!!! im gonna upgrade that however, i got a new fan today and its on the otherside of the gfx card cooling it down incase it was that, causing my issues, and so far today after playing it for about 3 hours total it didnt crash...might just be luck!....as for the Ram my Bios for somereason has no options to edit the Ram wich is odd, searched high and low in the bio ssettings for options but failed to find any!

It will be in the overclocking options depending on the MOBO - 3 hours and no crash  - it could just be down to the ambient temps in your room the pc is in - If the room is cool in the morning then you may be able to play longer than say in the afternoon.

I cannot see the pics you posted from my current location -

the RAM for the GPU is underneath there are 5 or 6 small black squares - that's them - you may not be able to get to them with the stock cooler on - but air blowing over/under the card will definately help :D

Hey!, ok i changed my Ram around to this -5-5-5-15-52

Was playing Cod4 same stuff again, this time i checked my temps...all where below 60...wich means it aint a temp Problem, Correction on my PSU its 280, sorry about that.

So...I was playing Mass Effect about an Hour ago...and badabing, it started 2 wobble, and then ,my pc shut itself down, so im thinking that this has 2 be a lack of power issue....Searched the web high and low, and its the only thing that really would make any kind of sense..what you guys think?, Thanks for all of y our help btw :)

Posted

I can't see it being a Power problem - 280 is enough for what you are running

As previous GPU is normally the most hungry component and yours is between 30 and 60 WATT on full 3D rendering

So I would bet its not the PSU *unless there is something wrong with it*

I would recommend running ORTHOS or EVEREST to stress test the PC - there are FREE version of both and will give you an indication of what is going on as I am struggling here

did you try the RAM at 5-5-15-42??
