Guest DavidB Posted August 9, 2007 Posted August 9, 2007 I defrag Win 98 from Safe Mode. After it finishes, it starts again by itself and then stops saying I have to run scan disk. Scan disk then shows "no errors". What could be going on here?
Guest glee Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 Re: Defrag re-starts automatically When you run scandisk when prompted, are you doing a scan of the file system only, or a Thorough scan which checks the hard drive surface? It may be requiring a surface scan. Start in DOS mode: - Start the computer and hold down the CTRL key till the Windows 98 Startup menu (boot menu) appears. OR - Repeatedly tap the F8 key after the memory count to bring up the boot menu. - Use the arrow keys to select "Command Prompt Only" and press Enter. At the command prompt, type the following and press Enter: scandisk /all /surface (That's scandisk <space> /all <space> /surface) It will quite a while to do a surface scan of a large disk, so do this when you do not need to use the computer for hours. When it is done and you are back at the command prompt, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart Windows. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "DavidB" <#davidb105#@sbcglobal.net> wrote in message news:46bb84ac.2213744@news.dallas.sbcglobal.net... >I defrag Win 98 from Safe Mode. Defrag may not actually be finished; the progress may stop, but when it tries to finalize the drive, it can't write what it needs to. Perhaps your not running the proper mode for Scandisk. *Thorough* should be used when Defrag indicates the need to run Scandisk, such as in Safe Mode or normal mode. Or as Glen suggests, use the DOS command line indicated. Did you check the Microsoft KBs for the potential errors? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/238165/en-us http://support.microsoft.com/kb/229154/en-us http://support.microsoft.com/kb/105068/en-us -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.orgfree.com ________
Guest DavidB Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 Re: Thank you Glen and MEB Re: Thank you Glen and MEB By following your instructions for scan disk and defrag, I was able to get a completed defragmentation that didn't give the appearance of automatically restarting. Thanks for your help.
