Hi All,

can someone tell me how long the xp HE repair should take.

Ihave been running it on my other PC for about 2 hrs, it seems to be cycling, is this normal or am I doing something wrong.I did notice in another thread you are supposed to remove IE 7,which I have not done.

Why do you have to remove it ?.

Regards,

Bill :confused::confused::confused:

1) An XP Repair should take less than an hour.

2) According to Microsoft's Knowledge Base article 917964 How to perform a repair installation of Windows XP if Internet Explorer 7 is installed

"Before you perform a repair installation of Microsoft Windows XP, you must uninstall Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 from the Windows XP-based computer. If you perform a repair installation of Windows XP when Internet Explorer 7 is still installed, Internet Explorer will not work after the repair is completed."

The Microsoft article continues on to tell you how to get Internet Explorer working after the repair.

Have you set the first boot device in the BIOS to CDROM

You can't abort a failed repair install. You either have to get the repair to complete, or clean install XP.

At what point is the repair recycling? We need more information in that regard.

Make sure the cd is clean, and try another cd rom if you have one. Other options for the repair to succeed:

1) Remove all third party devices (especially USB).

2) If you have onboard video as well as a separate video card, then remove the card and use the onboard.

3) If you have more than one stick of ram, try the repair with only one stick at a time.

Hi All,

As Dalo suggested I have set my 1st boot to cdrom and it is doing the same thing.

It starts to load gets as far as a blue page with writing on then starts all over again. The blue page is on for a nano second so I don't have time to read whats on it.

Did the install finish??

or did it just get to the point of reboot and then carried on over and over - when it has completely installed you need to set the first boot device BACK to HDD

From the sounds of it you need to do a fresh install - sometimes when using the repair console this happens - you would lose all your data so bear this in mind before you decide.

Hi Dalo,

Thought you might say that. Most of the stuff I use is on a external HD.

How do I do a fresh install when I am stuck in the repair set up ?

Bill

ok - go into the BIOS and set the first boot device to CDROM (disable all the other options like 2nd,3rd etc)

then save and exit the BIOS (usually F10)

when that is done it should reboot and start the process again, if it keeps rebooting let us know.

Ok look here http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;310396&

Also if you have more than 1 stick of RAM - take 1 out and see if it boots - if it doesn't take the other out and replace and see if that boots - you can also try taking the add in cards out 1 by 1 to see if it boots.

This is a common problem but there are many things that can cause it

Its easy to do - there will be 2 screws at the back of the pc that you undo and then there are 2 slots in there for the memory - they just slide out
