No Longer Able to Play WAV Content Inside Encarta Reference Suite 99

Hello,

I am no longer able to play WAV content inside either Bookshelf 99 or

Encarta 99 for Encarta Reference Suite 99. In Bookshelf 99, when I

try to play any sounds under the category of "Sounds", I get the

following error message:

"MEDIA ERROR

MMSYSTEM326 No wave device that can play files in the current format

is installed"

When I try to play a sound in Encarta Encyclopedia Deluxe 99, I get

the following error:

"There is a problem with your sound card configuration; refer to your

sound card documentation or Windows Help to make sure your sound card

is installed correctly."

In both Bookshelf 99 and Encarta 99, all the other content, such as

animations and video (with sound) will play correctly. I installed

the Media Test Tool (Mtstool.exe) diagnostic program from the Encarta

99 Installation and Resources CD and it correctly played all the

different types of media except for the "Director Movie - Macromedia"

type. I received the error "Runtime Error '7': Out of Memory.

However, I don't think this is the problem for Bookshelf or Encarta.

I tested different WAV, RMI, and MID files in my Windows Media Player

and they all played correctly with no problems. All other types of

media on my Windows 98SE PC will play correctly.

I have not made any major changes to my Windows 98SE system for a LONG

time. Because I don't use Windows Media Player to play MP3's or most

other content, I never upgraded WMP. Windows Media Player 6.4.07.1124

is still installed on this system. I use WinAmp 2.91 to play most of

my content but I have NOT changed any default player settings inside

WinAmp. Today is the first time I have noticed the problems I have

posted in this thread. The only real changes I have allowed are

upgrades for Adobe/Macromedia Shockwave and Director players. Again,

if anyone knows how to fix the problems I have posted in this thread,

please let me know.

know how to fix this problem, short of reinstalling my Encarta

Reference Suite 99? It would be nice to be able to fix this problem

I'm using WMP version 9.00.00.3008.

I have Bookshelf 1994.

If I try to play this file ...

root\MMCAT\INTRO.WAV

.... then WMP displays "Playing" but there is no audio and the slider

doesn't move. If I press the stop and play keys, WMP complains that

"the enumerator has become invalid".

WMP's File -> Properties reports a length of 00:14, media type

"audio", and the audio codec is "AC3Filter".

R-clicking the file in Explorer and selecting Properties -> Details

gives a media length of 14.960 sec and an audio format of "Microsoft

ADPCM,22,050Hz, 4 Bit, Mono".

The following file plays correctly:

root\BOOKS\MM\T005067A.WAV

WMP's Properties show a blank field for the audio codec, but Explorer

shows "PCM,22,050Hz, 8 Bit, Mono".

How to Troubleshoot Wave Sound File Problems in Windows 95, Windows 98,

and Windows Millennium Edition (Me)

I hope something in there can help. I do have MS Encarta Encyclopedia

2000 & went looking for a "sounds" section. Not sure I found it, but

everything I did find seemed to play well. Can you be more specific as

to what exactly it was you clicked in there? Also, every .wav file I

click in a Find box plays well.

In my case WMP9 had problems with certain WAVs until I installed the

following codec:

My other machine, with the same version of WMP9, did not have this

problem. I believe my AC3Filter issue may have arisen as a consequence

of an abortive installation of the K-Lite codec pack.

Perhaps the OP also has a codec problem. Viewing the file's properties

in WMP may give us a clue.

This Wikipedia article has a section entitled "WAV File Compression

Codecs Compared":

Many of the included sound samples did not play on my machine. I

noticed that the playable samples were encoded in 8-bit format,

whereas the unplayable ones were either 4-bit or 16-bit and were

detected by WMP9 as requiring an "AC3Filter" codec.

How can I tell whether I've installed that? I do not have a file named

ac3filter in this computer. I am also WMP9, but stockwizardry is

v.6.4.07.1124.

Well, that never happened to me. I guess it could have been the cause.

That's how you get ac3filter? I haven't taken it & feel no need to do

so. My own .wav are playing-- & some of them are 4-bit & 16-bit! Looks

like the avast! .wav's are 16-bit mono, & MSMoney .wav's are 4-bit mono.

I have a folder named C:\Program Files\AC3Filter which contains

ac3filter.ax plus several other "ac3" files.

anyhow.
