XP Home upgrade to XP Pro - Problems...

Wonder if any other forum users have come across this one...

I have just upgraded a couple of my customers networks...

In the process of doing the installs, I have had to upgrade 3-4 differnet

machines that had XP Home on to XP Pro...

All the machines with XP Home on were working without problems and fully

upgraded to the very latest Windows service packs and Updates...

I managed to get a good price on the XP Pro so I brought FULL (with XP2,

latest version) copies to do the upgrade with... I ran the wizzard at

startup which checked and downloaded any bits that were needed prior to the

upgrade and all checked out and worked fine...

Following the upgrades, the PC's have numerous problems, such as Windows

Update has packed up...., and one of the oddest ones is that when you double

click on the desktop icon for Internet Explorer, it automatically creates a

shortcut on the desktop!!???. The only way to run Internet Explorer is to

click START, ALL PROGRAMS then IE....

The upgrade has left the PC's in rather a mess... All the PC's are different

makes and they are spread across three different companies...., but all have

very similar problems..

It looks to me that there is some kind of problem with the Windows upgrade

process...

Has any one come across this before and does any one have any ideas how to

fix it, other than a full rebuild...?

I take it that you took a full system backup before you upgraded? Why not

start from restoring from the backups you took? That at least will get you

a working system.

Then you go to the MSKB and look for issues that you have.

Re: XP Home upgrade to XP Pro - Problems...

The Windows update thing not working is to do with .Net........... I had the

same problem after upgrading a PC from Home to Pro............ I can't

remember the fix but search Google for "unable to install XP updates .net"

and you should find enough information.

One of the machines I upgraded is still not working, working fine before

upgrade, now does not even boot!!! Not happy as I have removed / reinstalled

completely and still can't get it to boot........ still working on that one.
