Hi,

You cannot install some updates or programs

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822798&Product=winxp

http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support&tid=b6c408e5-0469-4a61-ab64-565977606cf8&cat=en_US_4fae9fed-da91-4a2a-9d2b-5dc71973d43c&lang=en&cr=US&sloc=en-us&m=1&p=1

In the above link for the reg.bat, try to save it to the desktop, then

double click the file to execute and click Yes when prompted.

HTH.

Had success with this.

I re-registered the Windows update dll as suggested by the following

post from http://forums.vnunet.com/message.jspa?messageID=870658

Try re-registering the windows update components. This may help fix a

corrupt installer

1. Click on Start and Run,

2. Type "REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL" (without quotation marks) and press

Enter.

3. Should get the message "DllRegisterServer in WUAPI.DLL succeeded"

Click OK.

4. Repeat above for each of the following:

REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL

REGSVR32 ATL.DLL

REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL

REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL

REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL

REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL

REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL

5. Reboot

Now try to install your updates.

RE: Windows Update

Here's a possible fix:

First, let me tell ya that I've tried all those patches and hints and tricks

from Microsoft. None of them worked. I got this from a different forum but I

forgot which one.

1) download freeware CCLEANER. You'll have to Google it uz I don't have the

address handy. Download CCLEANER. Reboot and when computer starts up again,

press F8 and go into the safe mode. In safe mode, run CCLEANER. Run Issues.

Also use tools to uninstall any programs that you might think are causing

problems.

After using CCLEANER to get rid of files that may be interfering with

downloads of updates then reboot and let computer return to normal mode. Try

downloading up dates.

If that doesn't fix it then try this...

2) Download freeware, Dial-A-Fix. Google it. When you download Dial-a-Fix

perform the 3 tasks: 1) Windows Installer 2) Windows Updates 3) All

registration Center . Do Not check any other tasks than the 3 mentioned. You

do not have to be in safe mode to do this. Reboot computer and try

downloading updates.

You might have to do these tasks a couple of times. I tried CCLEANER twice

and Dial-A-Fix once. After using Dial-A-Fix, I was able to download my

updates and install them.

The problem of not being able to install the security updates on my computer

is from 2 years of using my machine wihtout cleaning it, installing and

uninstalling a bunch of programs in the past 2 years and, also, a service

tech had installed a new DVD burner in my laptop and he could've damaged some

files.

Aother solutions to this problem of not being able to install Microsoft

security updates are: 1) turn of automatic updates and forget about 'em. 2)

erase your drive and reinstall XP OS and drivers and software. I had lived

with option #1 for a month. The only time I had problems was when I tried to

install Microsoft security updates.

But since I tried using CCLEANER and Dial-A-Fix, my problem has gone away.

If these two sharewares work for you, you might want to send them money for

their efforts. Good luck.
