Guest Greg Rozelle Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 I am a little confused. Didn't they make a free avg spyware program for windows 98? I look at their system requirement. It did not say windows 2000/NT or Xp. It just gave the very minimum requirements and did not list the operating system. What did they stop support for windows 98 spyware? (I do not like XP or Vista) I also notice http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Spyware/3000-8022_4-10610898.html That on this page it list 98. So for it to work, you must use the paid version. Am I correct? I just hope a don't have to go back using f-prot for dos for my virus protection. That would suck. Greg Rozelle

No. AVG Anti-Spyware (AVG-AS) was originally ewido Anti-Spyware before Grisoft bought it, and it never installed on or ran on Windows 98 or ME. > I look at their system requirement. The Supported Platforms I linked above is for the paid and free versions. > I just hope a don't have to go back using f-prot for dos for my virus > protection. That would suck. What does virus protection have to do with anti-spyware? They are two different types of program that do completely different things. F-Prot for DOS' days are numbered: http://www.f-prot.com/products/home_use/dos/ Once a Windows operating system is no longer supported by Microsoft, vendors usually start dropping support over a period of time. Some will still work but not be officially supported by the vendor; others will just stop working or installing on the older platforms. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm
Guest bobster Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 Re: Free avg spyware. Try this: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html Works great with Windows 98 or 98SE
Guest bobster Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 Re: Free avg spyware. OOPS! Sorry -- misread your post. Thot you were looking for Anti-Virus software. That being said, Avast! is a very good free AV if you should need one. I replaced my paid My-eTrust with it and find it to be superior.
Guest bobster Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 Re: Free avg spyware. Try this. Free and W98 compatible http://free.grisoft.com/doc/download-free-anti-spyware/us/frt/0
Guest MEB Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 Re: Free avg spyware. If your looking for Spyware protection try: Spyware Blaster [protects against some access/installations, ActiveX, immunization {sites, etc.}]. http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/ SpyBot Search and Destroy [search and remove, and immunization {sites, etc.}]. http://www.spybot.info/ - choose your language http://www.safer-networking.org/ Spybot-S&D 1.4 is not runnning on Windows 95. The next version will again be fully compatible. Please use Spybot-S&D 1.3; Winsock update necessary http://www.spybot.info/en/download/index.html http://www.spybotupdates.com/files/spybotsd14.exe The two together do a fairly good job, depending upon your Internet use of course. It might also be advisable to donate something to both of these parties, more donations [with a comment on the OS you're using], perhaps longer support for *dead* OSs. -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.orgfree.com ________ "glee" <glee29@spamindspring.com> wrote in message news:ugHJma72HHA.5424@TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... | Replies inline.... | | "Greg Rozelle" <invaild@invaild.com> wrote in message | news:au7vi.493$i75.255@newssvr19.news.prodigy.net... | >I am a little confused. Guest Dan Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 Re: Free avg spyware. The AVG antivirus supports Windows 98. I think the issue is a miscommunication. Perhaps, the expanded options of AVG are not supported on Windows 98. In addition, I read that AVG may be discontinuing support of Windows 98 in August 2008. Unfortunately, more and more companies will stop supporting Windows 98 since it had the end of its Microsoft support effective July 11, 2006. Guest Dan Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 Re: Free avg spyware. Well, the site says older operating system will be supported to August 2008 as a minimum. I am not sure of the language but I think it means that AVG will be supported until at least August 2008 and perhaps later. Here is the site. http://www.grisoft.com/doc/24/us/crp/0 The exact wording from the website is below: Important notice Anti-Spyware on-access scanner is available only on Windows 2000 SP4 + Update Rollup 1, Windows XP SP2, Windows XP Pro x64 Edition SP1 and Windows Vista/Vista x64 Edition. * Some older operating systems such as Microsoft Windows ME, Microsoft Windows NT and Microsoft Windows 98 will only be supported until August 2008 as a minimum. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Greg Rozelle" wrote: > On Sat, 11 Aug 2007 09:36:00 -0700, Dan > <Dan@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: > > >The AVG antivirus supports Windows 98.
