Command Line help in html

I find the Windows XP "Help and Support Center" difficult to

use as I'm trying to learn the different CMD commands that

is listed under "Command-line reference A-Z".

Does anyone know if there's a downloadable html I can put

on my system so I can more easily view/search the information?

If I can get the following set on my system...

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/ntcmds.mspx?mfr=true

Actually it would be ideal if I could get the whole set:

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/ntcmds.mspx?mfr=true

TIA

Actually, I'd like to be able to view in a web browser, preferably

..htm/.html type files. .chm help files are not any better for me.

See if this helps.

Go to Start -> Run and enter the following command in the Open

box.

hh.exe ntcmds.chm::/ntcmds.htm

Note: If you don't have Run on your Start menu hit the Windows

key + the R key.

Hit the OK button.

This should open Command-line reference A-Z in a separate

window.

Hit the Restore button in the top right corner to maximize the

window.

Click on the appropriate letter at the top to locate the

command you want to learn.

Once you've selected a command and finished reading the

instructions you can hit the Backspace key on your keyboard to

return to the main menu.

Keep in mind you can easily create a shortcut on your desktop

to launch this. Just right click an open spot on your desktop

and select New -> Shortcut from the menu. Enter the above

command in the location box. Name the shortcut and save it

someplace handy.

Good luck

Re: Command Line help in html

Yes, I have. The information is fine. My preference is to be able to

have multiple commands displayable (e.g. in tabs), to have bookmarks,

hyperlinks to other commands into other tabs, etc.

The command list is built into XP. The help file is located in <Windows

folder>\Help\ntcmds.chm

You can display it from the command prompt with:

hh.exe ntcmds.chm

Have you looked at the help file? It's identical to what's on MS's website

and the help files work just like an html document.

Re: Command Line help in html

How about if you download the HTML help workshop, and use it to disassemble

ntcmds.chm into all the 1000 or so individual HTML files that make up that

help file?

Re: Command Line help in html

Thanks Paul,

It's close to what I'm looking for but the links don't work.

Did the links get you to

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=00535334-c8a6-452f-9aa0-d597d16580cc&DisplayLang=en

to download HelpDocs.zip and htmlhelp.exe?

It has been a while since I used the help workshop to disassemble a .chm,

modify some bad style specification and reassemble the .chm. At that time,

it worked for me.

Re: Command Line help in html

Sorry, Paul... When I wrote that the links don't work, I meant

that the html files that are decompiled have links that don't work.

I'm in the middle of cleaning up links and creating an

index file with each command and a short description.

Re: Command Line help in html

Sorry I misunderstood. I haven't use this for a while, so I don't know why

the links are not working.
