Guest sumit Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 i have a dell latitude system and want to know if i take the hard drive out and install OS from some other computer by connecting it using USB will it work on my latitude. im trying all this as i have forgotten bios pwd and cant change the boot sequence to set it to boot from cd and ive tried every possible way to bypass bios pwd.
Guest Dave Candi Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 RE: bios password To bypass the bios password you'll need to take the cmos battery out for 10 seconds then put it back in again. Guest peter Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 Re: bios password If you cannot boot your Latitude , you can get the master password for your Dell by calling Dell Technical Support at (800)624-9896. Dell Technical Support will request the Service Tag and Express Service Code from the bottom of your Latitude. peter "sumit" <sumit@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:49CEDF62-9BF7-407B-9B59-0B424E2272C7@microsoft.com... >i have a dell latitude system and want to know if i take the hard drive >out > and install OS from some other computer by connecting it using USB will it > work on my latitude. im trying all this as i have forgotten bios pwd and > cant > change the boot sequence to set it to boot from cd and ive tried every > possible way to bypass bios pwd.

This is a common security feature for laptops. *that* is what you need to fix to do this right. This may help: http://www.tech-faq.com/dell-bios-password.shtml And unless the other PC that you install from is very similar, the install won't work as you describe. To reset the BIOS including the password, remove the back up battery for at least 10 minutes, 10 seconds isn't enough time. Mike.

Guest Curt Christianson Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 Re: bios password The one "possible" problem with the "paper clip short trick" is possible damage to the CMOS circuitry. CMOS circuitry is some of the most sensitive-the slightest static electricity just from handling them can "fry" them. Better off, if you're in a relative hurry is to discharge the circuitry through a fairly high resistance resistor, so as to limit current flow. Paper clip= Maximum current flow immediately~*possible* damage. -- HTH, Curt Windows Support Center http://www.aumha.org Practically Nerded,... http://dundats.mvps.org/Index.htm "Vista" <vi@vista.com> wrote in message news:f9jvpn$7b7$1@aioe.org... | Dave Candi wrote: | > To bypass the bios password you'll need to take the cmos battery out for 10 | > seconds then put it back in again. | | And why do you think that will work? | Why waste the guys time if you have no idea what you are talking about? | The only way to fix this is the paper clip short trick. | | | Vi | | | | | | | | > | > "sumit" wrote: | > | >> i have a dell latitude system and want to know if i take the hard drive out | >> and install OS from some other computer by connecting it using USB will it | >> work on my latitude. im trying all this as i have forgotten bios pwd and cant | >> change the boot sequence to set it to boot from cd and ive tried every | >> possible way to bypass bios pwd.

Note two points: 1. How long the battery has to be out varies substantially from computer to computer. It's often more than 10 seconds, sometimes as much as 15 minutes or even longer. 2 He doesn't necessarily *need* to do that. Although that works, there is often also a motherboard jumper that can be used to reset the BIOS. > "sumit" wrote: > > > i have a dell latitude system and want to know if i take the hard drive out > > and install OS from some other computer by connecting it using USB will it > > work on my latitude. im trying all this as i have forgotten bios pwd and cant > > change the boot sequence to set it to boot from cd and ive tried every > > possible way to bypass bios pwd. -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP Windows - Shell/User Please Reply to the Newsgroup
