RE: bios password

To bypass the bios password you'll need to take the cmos battery out for 10

seconds then put it back in again.

Re: bios password

If you cannot boot your Latitude , you can get the master password for your

Dell by calling Dell Technical Support at (800)624-9896.

Dell Technical Support will request the Service Tag and Express Service Code

from the bottom of your Latitude.

You'll need to contact Dell support to fix that, and take it to a service

depot. This is a common security feature for laptops. *that* is what you

need to fix to do this right.

This may help:

http://www.tech-faq.com/dell-bios-password.shtml

And unless the other PC that you install from is very similar, the install

won't work as you describe.

Have the ownership/registration transferred to you. They have a method for

this.

To reset the BIOS including the password, remove the back up battery for at

least 10 minutes, 10 seconds isn't enough time.

And why do you think that will work?

Why waste the guys time if you have no idea what you are talking about?

The only way to fix this is the paper clip short trick.

Oh the battery trick would work alright (assuming he could get at it being a

laptop). The problem is the battery may need to be removed for minutes, or

in some case hours before the data eventually drains away.

Boot to a Win9X/ME boot Floppy. Run Debug and type the

following commands

-o 70 2e

-o 71 ff

-q

This will "Default" most all BIOS settings.

I'm assuming the password is BIOS Setup not an actual Boot

Password.

Re: bios password

The one "possible" problem with the "paper clip short trick" is possible

damage to the CMOS circuitry. CMOS circuitry is some of the most

sensitive-the slightest static electricity just from handling them can "fry"

them. Better off, if you're in a relative hurry is to discharge the

circuitry through a fairly high resistance resistor, so as to limit current

flow. Paper clip= Maximum current flow immediately~*possible* damage.

You haven't a clue what you're talking about, much less the inner workings

of a PC and the CMOS (BIOS) settings.

That method has been the de-facto standard for longer than that.

Note two points:

1. How long the battery has to be out varies substantially from

computer to computer. It's often more than 10 seconds, sometimes as

much as 15 minutes or even longer.

2 He doesn't necessarily *need* to do that. Although that works, there

is often also a motherboard jumper that can be used to reset the BIOS.

Point remains that the advice was bollox. Removing the CMOS battery is

pants advice and a waste of time.
