Guest Dave Candi Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 I have a new hard drive as my old one experienced problems with chkdsk. This new drive is a hitachi from pc world. The drive refuses to defrag the system partition/c:? It hangs whilst being analysed on %20 also hangs on a straight defrag at the same point? I've tried using the trial disk keeper software. This hangs on %30? Maybe im being to impatient but the system appears to lock up completely? Is there a know solution to this problem? Any advice most welcome.
Guest R. McCarty Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 Re: Drive refuses to defragment? There is usually a pause/lag at the point where the MFT and other NTFS file keeping data is positioned on the volume. The MFT is offset by a certain % of the drive size into the volume. It may also be large content such as the Hibernate or Pagefile that could account for the pause. You need to ensure that the volume is not marked "Dirty" or in an inconsistent state. A cursory Chkdsk ( without a /F or /R qualifier ) will let you know if the volume is dirty. As to Diskeeper ( or Perfect Disk ) you need to do an Offline or pre Windows Defrag first, followed by a GUI Defrag. This repositions the MFT, Pagefile and other system content. Guest Achilles Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 Re: Drive refuses to defragment? 'Microsoft Corporation' (http://tinyurl.com/qopyc) Run chkdsk to see if there are any disk errors? If you look at the bottom of the Diskeeper GUI defrag window, it will tell you what file it is working on and how much of it has been processed. Maybe you can identify the file that is causing the freeze. Or maybe it could just be that its a huge file that takes time to be defragged. Diskeeper usually defrags very quickly compared to most other defraggers. As the poster above recommended, do a boot-time defrag first. I'd recommend that you do a diskcleanup using ccleaner or the windows tool itself before starting on the defrag process. But please be careful as to what files you delete using ccleaner. -- Achilles
Guest Panic Posted August 11, 2007 Posted August 11, 2007 Re: Drive refuses to defragment? Sometimes if you use 3rd party disk managers for protection of your computer, like GoBack or Rollback you won't be able to defrag since there are many hidden files for protection. If you experience this you can deactivate those type programs, run defrag and then activate them again. You will normally lose those program's memories which will start again when they are re-activated.
