Dr. Watson log file, big problems

I restarted my computer yesterday and an error box came up notifying me of

an error (I don't even remember what it was) with Windows. I clicked to send

the report to Microsoft.

Later on I started to do a backup to my Iomega drive and saw that the amount

of data on my C: was monstrous. I have a 220 GB drive on a pretty new

computer and only had used about 17 GB. It was showing I had 182 GB used. I

opened defrag and it showed a tremendously long red line indicating massive

fragmented files.

I began looking for the culprit and found the log file for Dr. Watson was

166 GB. I have no idea what the error was, but it wrote a massive amount

into the log file.

What do I do? There's no way to read the log file because it is too large

to open. There is no technician that will download a file that large, not to

mention how long it would take, so should I be worried? Can I just clear out

the log file? Possibly deleting it and creating another text file with the

same name.

Open Dr. Watson log. Due to its size, one might have to use Wordpad. The

top block should indicate the most recent application crash. What is it?

Delete Dr. Watson log but check for it whenever an error box appears.

Also, the error(s) should be reported into Event Viewer. The problem is

pointing to an aberrant or out-of-control application that keeps on re-

loading itself.

Re: Dr. Watson log file, big problems

I am unable to open the.log file with WordPad, possibly because it is too

large. However, the error says: An unknown error occurred while trying to

open an unnamed file.

Also, what is the Event Viewer? Every time an error occurs I click the

button to send the report.

The more I thought about it, I had been having trouble with Panda Platinum

Internet Security. I had to uninstall it after I restarted yesterday. I

would bet that is the problem. However, I still want to open the .log file.

Thanks for the help,

Doug

Open Control Panel. Double-click on Administrative Tools. Event Viewer

should appear in the next box. Double-click on it. Dr. Watson error

reports are usually written up in the Applications window.

Thanks for the information on Event Viewer. I went down the list and there

were a massive amount of entries at the same time on Thursday where Panda

Platinum Internet Security was evidently hanging up constantly trying to

upgrade. At least that's what I can get from it. There were a few errors at

the time of the error on Friday, but they were not Dr. Watson. I'm not sure

how to analyze these entries. However, I will delete the log file and have

deleted Panda.

Delete it!

Dr. Watson can be a major PITA and the 'average' user can come by without

having this application in use.

Disable Dr. Watson dump file creation.

This is a program error debugger that gathers all kinds of information about

your computer when a user error or user-mode fault occurs within a program.

To stop creation of these files, follow this procedure:

Go to start, then run, then type in ‘regedit.exe’ and hit ‘Enter’

Browse to the following location in the left pane:

HKEY_LOCAL-MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AeDebug

Left click on the value ‘Auto’ on the right pane, and change the value from

‘1’ to ‘0’ Close the registry editor.

To delete the dump files created by Dr Watson on earlier occasions, you will

have to delete them manually with this procedure: Open Windows explorer,

Browse to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr

Watson and delete files named User.dmp and Drwtsn32log.

Get youself a decent AV application:

Avira AntiVir® PersonalEdition Classic is one of the better ones.

http://www.free-av.com/antivirus/allinonen.html

Use Crap Cleaner

http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

If Windows Defender is utilized go to Applications, under Utilities uncheck

"Windows Defender"

And do yourself a favor and remove all maleware from your pc.

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --

http://www.pctipp.ch/downloads/dl/35905.asp

To use this utility, perform the following...

Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }

Choose; Unzip

Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT

{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go

through your

FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}

This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in

Normal Mode.

This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web

site.

The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot

the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or

you can

download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have

downloaded the files

needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe

Mode [F8 key

during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to

run in Safe

Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal

Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more

comprehensive PDF help

file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm
