Dalo Harkin Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 (edited) How is it Microsoft?? - if you buy something you go back to where you bought it from and if that fails the manufacturer - I would kick off at Belkin and request either money back or a replacement product that 'works' with Vista. Companies try and pass the buck mate but it is Belkin. SHOPPERS' RIGHTS – Your Legal Rights If it's 2 months old and now is 'incompatible with Vista SP1' then it is not working simple as that. I would seriously recommend doing back ups on CD/DVD using software. what if the HDD fails - or as in this case - is no longer working. RandyL Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Three choices here Osprey. Get a different one that is compatable with Windows and the updates. Uninstall SP1. Disable Windows Automatic Updates so that you can choose the updates you want and de-select non-Windows software updates. Of course un-doing the specific updates may be problematic in some cases but in your case you might just be able to uninstall all software and drivers for belkin and start over. Dalo Harkin Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 In regards to the 'uninstall SP1' I would have to agree - there is not much in their that you NEED. Randy - do hardware updates not show as 'optional' anyway - I know they used to on XP - not really noticed on Vista  Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
RandyL Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Yes Dave they will show as optional. It's just that so many people take all the updates. For instance there is a driver update that interferes with DVD playback on mine. Granted it wouldn't be in SP1 but something in it conflicts. Quote We are all members helping other members. Osprey Posted September 18, 2009 Author Posted September 18, 2009 Yes Dave they will show as optional. It's just that so many people take all the updates. For instance there is a driver update that interferes with DVD playback on mine. Granted it wouldn't be in SP1 but something in it conflicts. Update ... finally managed to get Belkin to test the model, and they agree it does not work with SP1. They state this is a Microsoft issue as they do not supply any drivers - Vista uses inbuilt standard USB driver. Also got Microsoft to open a support case ... they dialled into my PC on several occasions. Full HDD reformat, clean install of Vista ... all OK, then install SP1 ... BSOD ... every time drive is plugged in, or if plugged in at time of switch on. ... and now agree that there is an issue with the USB software changes in SP1 ... and admit there are other known problems with specific hardware. However after almost a year ... still no fix for Vista. and being Microsoft will not keep the support case open ... even though it is not fixed. Found another USB device won't work on SP1 as well - a USB hub (also Belkin) .... so still on SP1. Dell still take view ... they didn't supply the external HDD and as all OK if it's not plugged in, they see no fault on their PC. The Drive works OK on XP, and VISTA without SP1 Quote
Plastic Nev Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 Thanks for the update on this Osprey. It must be frustrating for you by now that there is still no further advance. However I do have a suggestion, there is now service pack 2 out for Vista. I know you may be reluctant to take that on board in case it makes things worse. However, I can't see that it would make things worse, but maybe the issues could have been corrected within this service pack, and although nothing may be gained if I am wrong, at least it would be worth a try to see if it does work. otherwise we can only say that this is another mess from Vista.
