Hi, I have a laptop with a windows 2000 trial version installed. Trial version doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have all the functions, it just shuts down after two hours. I hav been trying to replace it with a full version but the laptops cd-player is broken. I have tried using daemon tools but it usually ends with file copying problems. Do anybody have any ideas what I can do?

Ps. It is a Toshiba satellite 300CDS.

Do yourself a favour and put the whole lot in the nearest dustbin you can find ok.

This old laptop is just not worth the time and effort to fix and to be honest I never heard of a "trial" version of W2K.

There is no such thing as a trial version of any Microsoft Operating Systems. Please elaborate on your issue.

Also, look at the bottom of the laptop. There will be a Microsoft sticker (will also say "Toshiba") that has the operating systems product key. It's a 1" by 3" blue and white sticker. Does the sticker show Windows's 2000 or something else?

The laptop is slightly better than the specs on the internet, as it can actually support win 2000 without any major problems, as for the authenticity, I have no idea, it was a hand-me-down from one of my fathers friends. there is no product key, just a small tag saying "designed for Microsoft windows NT/windows 95" with the regular windows logo.

Well, perhaps a "trial version" actually refers to an unactivated copy of Windows here. If thats the case Pixel, then I think you will need to activate your copy of Windows using tne product key. I don't know the exact way of doing it as I have never used it myself but there must be an option in the Control Panel. A better option would be to reinstall Windows itself but as the CD drive is broken, I think you will probably need to buy a new one.

So, if you really want the laptop working, invest in a compatible CD drive and then try to reinstall from it. That should probably overcome the obstacles you are facing.

Good Luck. :)

I reckon you could put w2k on that machine but you would have no space left for anything else and you would need to up the ram considerably.

Here are the specs for the laptop.

Toshiba Satellite 300CDS - P MMX 166 MHz - 12.1" DSTN : Read reviews and compare prices at Ciao.co.uk

These are the system requirements for Windows 2000 Pro

Windows 2000 Professional was designed as the desktop operating system for businesses and power users. It is the client version of Windows 2000. It offers greater security and stability than many of the previous Windows desktop operating systems. It supports up to two processors, and can address up to 4 GB of RAM. The system requirements are a Pentium processor of 133 MHz or greater, at least 32 MB of RAM, 700 MB of hard drive space, and a CD-ROM drive (recommended: Pentium II, 128 MB of RAM, 2 GB of hard drive space, and CD-ROM drive)

As I have said, mine do not follow the specs. the HDD is about 3.4gb if my memory is correct, and the ram should be somwhere around 64mb. And for the record, I was planing on installing a WORKING os. win2k is just what i would prefer since it i have more experience with it than win me, win xp is too hardware demanding, and 98 is too weak.

Ok

So once you have installed W2K on that laptop after you have bought a new slide in cdrom drive (if you can still obtain one) you are left with 1.5GB of hard disk space, not much is it.

Let us talk of memory. The cost of obtaining (again if you can find it) another, at least 64mb, of SODIMM ram for that laptop would be expensive and you can only go up to 144mb anyway.

Don't believe me? Ask around Kitten.

Please understand that I am not trying to pee on your strawberries but this is a fruitless exercise. :(

Wolfey, please try to understand that I will not use this as i would a real computer. It will merely be a portable internet connection and a notepad, maybe i will install vlc and watch something stored on a portable drive. I just like to have everything somewhat functional in case everything else fails. I will be getting a new laptop this fall, and the future for this one will probably be being stored somewhere in the living room and occasionally being used to check reviews to decide what to watch tonight.

Also I would like to note that i have an ancient ibm thinkpad 360cs with win 3.11 on. it is currently being used for retro lulz.
